Job Summary

To support the Unit Manager and Principal Engineers and to lead a small team of engineers and technicians.


The post reports to a Principal Engineer within the team. The post is located in Swindon although the post holder will be expected to undertake site visits and may be expected to work in other locations within the UK for short periods if necessary.

  • Undertake site visits (may include nights and weekends)
  • Write reports and undertake designs with little supervision, manage small teams undertaking the same
  • Work flexibly both as an individual and as part of a team

  • Be aware of and contribute to the goals of both the Company and Unit Business Plan
  • Manage own performance in respect of company Quality procedures, and contribute to the adherence of others to the procedures
  • Have a good knowledge of issues of contracts, project risks and professional indemnity
  • Manage own performance and time utilisation ensuring deadlines are met
  • Manager small teams and ensure deadlines are met
  • Contribute and improve the quality of information, methods, deliverables and systems
  • Support others so that the team and project goals are achieve
  • Be committed to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for self and discipline
  • Take an active role in the development of younger engineers
  • Demonstrate high standards and integrity in all business relationships
  • Maintain the professional image of URS at all times
  • Promote a professional attitude in dealing with colleagues, clients and the community at large.

Application of Skills & Knowledge
  • Build expertise by developing an overall understanding of URS offerings and processes
  • Able to clearly and concisely understand and communicate technical related material
  • Display a positive attitude to all activities

  • Good team member and leader where appropriate

Minimum Requirements
  • Must be willing to undertake additional duties as requested by immediate manager
  • Must be prepared to undertake railway medical and PTS course
  • Must be prepared to work at other UK sites, sometimes at short notice
  • Must comply with company D&A Policy
  • Must be fit enough to pass railway medical and PTS course as site visits may be necessary
Must be prepared to visit sites at a variety of locations within the UK

Preferred Qualifications
  • Degree in relevant subject
  • Chartered Engineer and/or Member of relevant Professional Institution
  • Proven relevant experience, some of which should ideally be within the railway sector
  • Proven structural designer
