This department (D451) provides engineering support of propulsion plant (i.e. Reactor Plant Instrumentation and Control Systems, Steam Plant Control and Indication Systems, Electric Plant and components support for Power Electronic Inverters and Converters, Power Distribution Switchboards and Circuit Breakers, Microprocessor Based Instrumentation and Control Equipment, Electromagnetic Controllers, Transformers, Bus Transfer Devices and Control Stations) and non-nuclear (i.e. Auxiliary Systems, Interior Communications, Impressed Current Cathodic Protection, Energy Storage, Circuit D etc.) electrical components and systems for submarines in construction at the Electric Boat shipyard. Responsibilities include deck plate support, troubleshooting and engineering review of design error correction Engineering Reports. Engineers work in a fast paced, multi-discipline environment, and interface with other engineering disciplines, senior management, shipyard trade and test personnel, suppliers and customers on a frequent basis. Engineers in this department have the opportunity to support the construction and test of nuclear powered submarines from procurement of equipment, through sea trials, and delivery. This department is also cognizant of Electrical Nuclear Overhaul and Repair Engineering which is an integral part of Electric Boat's Maintenance and Modernization business. With this business, Electric Boat provides mission-ready submarines to the fleet through maintenance, modernization, alterations and improvements. D451 engineers provide nuclear engineering support for maintenance and alteration activities on submarines, including the planning, execution, and certification of work. D451 routinely develops technical work documents (TWDs), provides technical direction and oversight, and evaluates shipboard conditions.
