Carillion Health, a division of Carillion Support services works closely with a number of NHS Trust clients throughout the UK to provide a self-delivery capability across the full range of hard and soft facilities management ranging from portering, security, housekeeping to mechanical and engineering work. One of our largest contracts is with Bart’s Health Trust, the largest NHS Trust in the UK where we provide the full range of soft facilities management to 5 hospitals across Central and London.

Our busy Portering team at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel is looking for individuals with experience of working in a Hospital environment, who have either previously worked as a Supervisor or individuals looking for promotion to this level. The Royal London Hospital is internationally renowned within the larger Bart’s Health Trust and is located in East London, within easy reach of transport. The Portering team contribute to the effective and efficient management of patient care, by providing a safe, caring and timely internal patient movement operation, and associated duties.

To provide a safe comprehensive, high quality and value for money Portering Service, to meet the Trust’s operational requirements. This role is an excellent opportunity to enhance your Supervisory Skills in a caring environment where you will be encouraged to have your say and to put forward any ideas you believe can improve service. You must be able to demonstrate your ability to motivate a team of Portering staff
  • The successful candidates will supervise, train and allocate work tasks to portering staff and give feedback on their performance
  • You will implement and maintain correct and safe working methods in accordance with the Health & Safety and Infection Control Policies
  • The post holder will assist in the process of recruitment and selection and staff appraisal programmes. Responsible for maintaining staff discipline, reporting any breaches to Portering Manager. Carry out staff counselling when required relating to attendance, performance, conduct, return to work interviews.
  • The post holder must actively supervise and log all Portering staff activity/work and to delegate tasks in order of priority and to ensure that job requests are dealt with courteously and on a fair and rational basis when possible.
  • Main duties will be to liaise and communicate with service users, staff, by way of telephone, PC (help desk), and radio communication system.
  • To prepare staff clock cards, calculate staff annual leave days and to complete staff weekly/monthly pay sheets, and any other clerical duties relevant to staff or Portering operations. Process annual leave/other leave requests.
  • The Post holder will be required to cover Dispatching duties. These duties will include, ensuring that tasks allocated to Porters using the Carps system.
  • The Post holder maybe required to cover mortuary duties, medical gases, waste collection service, blood and specimen requests; post room duties and general Portering duties as and when required.
  • The Post holder will be responsible for new Portering staff induction and he/she will be responsible for organising all mandatory training for the porters prior to them commencing work.
  • To respond to any major incident that may be declared in line with the Trust’s Major Incident Procedure. Staff may be required to come in during a major incident event outside his/her normal working hours.
