GDMS has an immediate opening for a Staff Technical Writer to join our logistics team in Taunton, MA to support the Tactical Airspace Integration System (TAIS) program. The position provides an opportunity to support the development of cutting-edge technology that supports some of our nation's fundamental defense services. In this role, the Staff Technical Writer will be responsible for:
- Creating, developing, planing, writing and editing complex operational, instructional, maintenance or test manuals for various publications and/or proposals to meet program requirements for technical documentation and also interactive electronic technical manuals (IETMs)
Gathering text and materials (such as engineering models, drawings, schematics, spreadsheets, etc.) by researching products and data, conducting in depth interviews with various users, technical staff and subject matter experts in order to analyze, interpret and convert the information into end-user military standard (MIL STD) documentation and reference materials such as maintenance allocation charts and repair parts and special tools lists
Mentoring junior writers, providing feedback and critiquing work to assist with developing leadership skills, documentation skills and expertise with production tools, projects, etc.; providing input to junior writers quality control instruction for evaluation, recommendations for skills improvement and objective setting
Researching new production tools and third party software that will help improve work processes by conducting research via internet, trade journals, seminars, user forums, etc. to solve current work-flow problems and suggesting to management ways to improve our documentation process
Providing recommendations and ideas to the technical documentation team, project leads, management and the customer on best work practices, work-flow, presentation, structure and organization of materials by developing new work processes and methods using existing authoring tools, new authoring tools and third party plug-ins to improve work process efficiency and overall quality of customer deliverables
Planning, budgeting and scheduling technical writing projects including the coordination of work assignments with other members of the technical documents team; leads teams/large projects
Supporting Capability Maturity Model Integration efforts by defining methods and procedures on new assignments
Documenting engineering processes and specifications by editing software developer and engineering staff notes and procedures and applying formatting in order to support the writing and publication of hardware and software test procedures, white papers, read-me files, etc
Proactively informing management team and project leads to report project status, issues or concerns, including issues of scope, schedule
Ensuring the accurate preparation of documents for interim and final delivery to customer by creating and preparing materials (agendas, etc.) in order to facilitate various validations and verifications of manuals with the customer
In this Role, the Staff Technical Writer must have:
Strong knowledge of MIL STD documentation- specifically 40051-2B and 2361D as applied to Operator (-10) and maintainer (-23&P)
Strong knowledge of xml authoring concepts, practices and tools (such as Arbortext Editor, Oxygen Xmetal, etc.)
Advanced English language skills including accurate definitions and spelling of relevant technical words, rules of composition, and grammar
Advanced written communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate with the target audience
Excellent verbal communication, listening and interviewing skills
Excellent ability to research and interpret data
Excellent working knowledge of DoD MIL Standards and style guides and the ability to adhere to and implement such standards to technical documentation
Informational expertise in several areas of their job (i.e. production tools, projects, DoD MIL STD, IETMS, etc.)
Expert level proficiency with editing and production tools (i.e. FrameMaker, MS Word, Arbor Text, etc.)
Comprehensive knowledge of publication systems
Strong team leader skills with ability to supervise and excellent people skills

- Interface with engineering staff to research and interpret engineering schematics, technical design specifications, interface designs, design diagrams and test
- Prepare inputs to and maintain status reports
The Staff Technical Writer position requires a Bachelor's Degree in English, Technical Writing, Engineering, or Computer Sciences and a minimum of 8 years of related experience in service-based industry, technical support role, or in program planning/cost controls or equivalent experience.
Travel may be required. The Staff Technical Writer works on and provides resolution to problems of high level scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors. Expert use and application of standard principles, theories, concepts, and techniques required.
