Sr. Undersea Network Optics Engineer

General Dynamics Mission Systems has an immediate opening for a Sr. Undersea Network Optics Engineer to join our team. The position provides an opportunity to develop the cutting-edge technology that supports some of our nation's fundamental defense services. General Dynamics Mission Systems employees work closely with esteemed clients to develop solutions that allow them to carry out high-stakes national security missions.

The selected candidate will work with collaborative teams to design, develop and manage a variety of equipment and systems solutions for General Dynamics Mission Systems and its clients. Key Responsibilities

The Sr. Undersea Network Optics Engineer will design, develop, build and test systems and products based on optic, photonic and laser technologies. Additionally the position will interact with device, hardware and software design teams to assist in overall development of optical systems which includes: specifying, selecting and qualifying active and passive optical components, developing and benchmarking system performance models, developing and implementing test procedures and/or evaluating and selecting appropriate test instrumentation. Recommends technological modifications to the development of new photonic products and/or design changes that improve performance of existing products.

Basic Qualifications

Job Requirements

Candidates should demonstrate sophisticated problem solving skills, as well as an ability to design, develop and implement innovative General Dynamics Mission Systems business solutions. The Sr. Network Optics Engineer must have a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics, or in a related specialty or the equivalent, and eight to ten years of related experience. Applicants with a master's degree and six to eight years of professional experience also qualify.

The successful candidate will have experience in designing, analyzing, specifying, testing, and implementing high speed long haul optical transport systems. Experience with performance modeling of optical transmitters, receivers, and amplifiers is required.

U.S. Government Top Secret/SCI/Poly security clearance is required at time of hire. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.

Qualifications (Preferred)

Candidates should demonstrate sophisticated problem solving skills, as well as an ability to design, develop and implement innovative General Dynamics Mission Systems business solutions. Additional preferred skills:

  • Familiarity with high-speed transport, including Synchronous Optical Network / Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SONET/SDH), Generic Framing Procedure (GFP), Optical Transport Network (OTN), at rates up to 10 gigabits per second (Gbps) and higher

  • Direct experience with commercial multiplexing, routing, and switching hardware and routing protocols

  • Familiarity with performance monitoring metrics

  • Familiarity with Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) transport systems (metro, unrepeatered, or long-haul), and design and impairment analysis of such systems.

  • Candidate should have experience in developing requirements and specifications, demonstrated leadership in an integrated team environment and excellent verbal and writing skills.
