Our manufacturing engineers develop systems and processes, and select machines, tools, and equipment to turn raw materials (e.g., steel and aluminum) into a part or product in the most economic, efficient, and effective way possible.
The job responsibilities include:
Lead the Manufacturing Engineering functions for part sequencing, training and troubleshooting for all shop floor engineers in both theory and application.
Implement industry best practices for strategic and tactical process improvements and product launch. Facilitate the evaluation, development and prove out of new technologies, methods, processes, equipment, tooling and fixtures in a turnkey project environment.
Perform Ergonomic and Job Hazard Assessments to ensure that existing and proposed new production processes do not put our employees at risk of injury.
Create manufacturing instructions, routers and bills of material. Effectively work with the Project Engineer, suppliers and other subject matter experts to determine optimum methods and processes for manufacturing components and systems.
Attend engineering design reviews, provide productibility suggestions, and rank each design in accordance with Manufacturing Risk codes. Lead Design for Manufacturability efforts. Evaluate life cycle cost including diminishing resource impact over product life cycle. Develop transition to production plan(s) and determine full-rate tooling and equipment needs.
Participate as a design team member to manage and improve design-to-build lead times, reduce costs and oversee manufacturing process design evolution.
For our supply base, provide input to activities such as supplier evaluation, source selection, request for proposal submittal reviews, best value determination and supplier capacity analysis.
Provide technical expertise as needed/requested in the areas of manufacturing, test, failure analysis and part selection, including supplier manufacturing capabilities and capacity. Review drawing changes and contract modifications to determine and address the impact to the manufacturing process.
Proficient with Siemens NX integrated software: CAM, Solid Modeling, and Drafting; CMM software (e.g., PCDIMS).
Develop and conduct technical training of the production operators in the skills necessary to perform the production operations.
Prevent and solve manufacturing problems by performing Failure Modes and Effects Analysis for production processes. Solve manufacturing problems and troubleshoot production processes by performing root cause analysis for problem operations. Consult in troubleshooting product failures and quality issues and lead root cause and corrective action teams as necessary. Disposition non-conforming material both within GDOTS facilities and at suppliers including implementation of corrective and preventive actions. Develop special work instructions and/or rework or repair instructions as needed.
Develop project charters and project plans, schedules and resource budgets for projects and initiatives. Interface with upper management, customers and suppliers presenting the technical aspects associated with manufacturing processes, root cause analysis and metrics.
Lead / Support continuous improvement initiatives (including Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, Kaizen events, 5Ss, Kanbans and QCO (Quick Change over) teams, Design for Manufacturability, quality and cost reduction initiatives). Work closely with production operators and technicians and suppliers to reduce waste and optimize efficiency. Define and improve the value stream and process capabilities for different types of manufacturing processes and equipment.
Lead/support new business proposal activity in cost estimating and developing manufacturing strategy. Performs make/buy analysis for new and existing manufacturing processes.
Assume the leadership role of Manufacturing Integrated Product Team member in a multi-functional environment. Serves as an advisor to business on Engineering related matters. Serves as mentor to other MEs.
May have salary and/or hourly direct reports.
BS degree or advanced degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or other closely related technical field.
Strong communication skills, including ability communicate within all levels of the organization and to coach and educate/train peers, direct reports, and hourly employees.

12+ years engineering experience in machining manufacturing environment, including proofing out new products, technologies, etc.
CNC Programming experience for Lathes, Mills, Grinders, etc. and experience with Fanuc controls.
Strategic approach to product line development / improvements, technology enhancements, and product launch capabilities.
Bid and Proposal estimating for machine time, NRE and proofing.
Project Leadership skills, problem solving skills, conflict resolution skills, and demonstrates ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
Problem solving abilities for complex and unusual challenges that require a high degree of ingenuity, creativity, and innovativeness.
Proficient with Siemens NX integrated software: CAM, Solid Modeling, and Drafting; CMM software (e.g., PCDIMS); CADRA. Basic knowledge of TIPQA and ERP systems (e.g., Oracle or IFS).
