About the Business Line
Our team of environment specialists offers clients expertise in air quality, impact analysis and permitting, environmental health and safety management consulting/due diligence, remediation consulting/engineering and construction/site restoration, specialty and emerging technologies, waste services and water and natural resources.
AECOM is currently recruiting for an experienced Geotechnical Engineer to support our well established and experienced Ground Engineering team in Birmingham.
We require a geotechnical engineer with a solid background in leading geotechnical studies and design for complex new build infrastructure.
We are looking for an ambitious team player who has a passion for problem solving and who wishes to develop in an environment that is collaborative, stimulating and demanding.
Nationally our Ground Engineering team comprises some 175 staff and provides one-stop access to services ranging from project management, feasibility studies, detailed design, contract administration and construction supervision for geotechnical works. We work for leading UK clients including Highways England, Network Rail, HCA, Thames Water, as well as for leading contractors and developers and for overseas clients. We have an impressive portfolio of projects, working on a range of major infrastructure projects including Crossrail, Thames Tideway, HS2, Stockholm Bypass, Mersey Gateway, Northern Hub and Hinkley Point C nuclear power station.
Our Birmingham team works closely with other AECOM disciplines notably Tunnelling, and supports internal and external clients on a wide variety of projects in many sectors, but predominantly in road, rail, nuclear, property and water.
The role will involve design and reporting of geotechnical works including slope stability, foundations, retaining structures, tunnels, earthworks and ground improvement, and will require strong capability and experience in soil/structure interaction and numerical modelling using finite element analysis.
You will report to an Associate Director and will be responsible for day to day liaison with external and internal clients and other AECOM disciplines, and for delivery of projects and work packages to a high level of technical quality and to programme and budget.
You must have strong behavioural competencies with respect to client care, collaborative working, responsibility and independent decision making. The role will include preparation of fee proposals for new work elements and projects.
The ability to write clear and concise technical reports is an essential requirement.
• Solid career history in geotechnical design
• Possesses strong problem solving and inter-personal skills.
• Works closely and collaboratively with colleagues, client and delivery partners.
• Good communication skills both oral and written, ability to write clear and concise technical reports.
• Good knowledge of soil and rock parameter selection, design of foundations and piles to EC7, retaining wall design and settlement analysis.
• Extensive experience of finite element analysis using Plaxis and other geotechnical software including WALLAP and SlopeW.
• Experienced in the scoping, tendering and administering of ground investigations.
• Some experience with tunnels in soils and weak rocks would be an advantage.
• Knowledge and experience of relevant Eurocodes and UK standards and specifications, in particular those of Network Rail and Highways England.
• Chartered Engineer, or close to achieving Chartered Engineer status.
• A valid UK driving licence is preferable. Willing to travel within the UK and undertake short assignments in the UK and occasionally overseas.
A first degree in Civil Engineering is preferred although candidates with an Engineering Geology or similar background will be considered provided that they are strongly numerate.
Ideally the candidate will have a relevant post graduate qualification in Geotechnical Engineering or Engineering Geology.
