What is the purpose of this role?

• Overall responsibility to assist the Senior Materials Planner in development, monitoring and reporting of material requirements for Amey Pre-Assembly.
• To support the Materials and Logistics Manager and the Pre-Assembly Manager and their respective teams.
• Produce schedules of the daily parts requirements by the Pre-Assembly team.
• Provide to the Pre-Assembly Manager for weekly submissions of the requirements to Network Rail, 7 days in advance of the commencement of the week in which the parts are required.

What will this role involve?

• Collecting and inputting Pre-assembly and Installation requirements as directed by Senior Materials Planner and assist with provision of information into planning of all works.
• Understand and recognise the role of Becthel Procurement System, Network Rail’s Material Management software.
• Use and clearly understand Engineering Drawings such as Assembly Drawings, Component Drawings, Allocation Design and Construction (Cross-Section) Drawings.
• Use engineering drawings such as “Allocation design” and “OLE Cross sections”, to ‘take off’ quantities and produce schedules of materials requirements to deliver the parts and components for planned daily pre-assembly production and for planned installation by the High Output train
• Ensure that materials are specified correctly, orders are placed to meet the project programme
• Produce and maintain material schedules for all works, providing information and reports for planning meetings and as requested by Senior Materials Planner.
• Attend any required meetings.
• Report to and work under the direction of the Senior Materials Planner and in close collaboration with the Materials and Logistics Manager and the Pre-Assembly Manager;
• Undertake advance planning of assembly requirements and scheduling of component requirements.
• Assist and support assembly staff to maximise performance, to ensure compliance with all relevant technical, quality, environmental and safety standards.
• Investigation and reporting of faults, identification of fault trends.


• Participate in regular monthly safety meeting with the Depot Manager.
• Ensure all equipment fabricated is correct to design and identified correctly for its specific location.
• Ensure staff work to timescale and safely
• Ensure stock control is maintained and schedules for material delivery to the HOOB are met
• Ensure that mandatory issued PPE is used.

What are we looking for?

• Recognised engineering apprenticeship or equivalent industry experience
• Experience of fabrication of OLE equipment
• Excellent planning and organisational capabilities
• Previous experience of supporting teams ideally on large rail projects
• Excellent communication and motivation skills essential
• Knowledge and experience of railway rules, regulations & standards, and relevant safety legislation
• Knowledge of Health and Safety at Work Act
• Understanding commercial processes and requirements
• Experience of risk assessment techniques
• Understanding of Network Rail Line Standards
• Computer literate.
• Able to drive
• Full Driving Licence

• Proven experience in ability to work within a team
• Strong communication skills â€" able to communicate with people at all levels
• Highly organised with an excellent attention to details
• Advance use of Microsoft Office, plus other tools/systems as defined by the project or client
• Ability to show financial awareness with regard to procedures
• Understanding Health and safety legislation relative to construction

• Knowledge of railway operations.
• Knowledge of relevant Health & Safety legislation
• Sound professional engineering and IT skills
• Assembly and stores/stock control experience
• Experience of managing small assembly team ensuring good practice

Technical competencies
• Experience of supervising and developing staff
• Sound professional engineering and IT skills

Role specific technical competencies
• A formal, recognised qualification in Mechanical Engineering
• Apprenticeship trained in mechanical or plant engineering
• A minimum of three year’s experience at a technical level in an engineering role in the Rail industry
• Mechanical Engineering background with good technical knowledge
