GDMS has an immediate opening for a Undersea Cable Deployment Sr Advanced Systems Engineer to join our team. The position provides an opportunity to develop cutting-edge technology that supports some of our nation's fundamental defense services. The selected candidate will work with collaborative teams to create and manage various GDMS and client technologies. Key Responsibilities
The Undersea Cable Deployment Sr Advanced Systems Engineer will provide technical leadership in the design and development of the submarine and undersea cable communication systems to include, specification development, planning, procurement, manufacturing, and deployment. Execute analysis requiring knowledge of deployment and installation of high-bandwidth and high-reliability communications systems, including theory and practices and perform engineering studies to determine requirements and long-range engineering plans and designs. Support the planning of systems installations based upon system requirements and oceanographic data. Develop procurement specifications for system manufacturing and identify requirements and a timeline for installation using cable laying ships. Support contract management and assist in the oversight of the production contractor, including component qualification and system test and evaluation. Assist in troubleshooting and failure analysis of systems due to hardware failure or cable damage.

The position requires experience and knowledge of marine subsea cable deployement techniques/technologies and electronics packaging for full ocean depth applications. The candidate will be a member of the Integrated Seaborne Systems organization located in Greensboro, North Carolina. This position may require up to 25% travel.

Additional Responsibilities

Develop systems deployment Concept of Operations and trade studies

Lead technical activities on acquisition proposal teams and program execution

Perform cost estimations

Serve as the technical lead for state of the art undersea cable deployment techniques and technologies

Deliver innovative, flexible, integrated solutions to meet customers changing business needs

Support and engage in programs, projects and practices behind the General Dynamics Mission Systems culture and strategy, and comply with all policies and procedure

Follow industry and department trends and developments to ensure General Dynamics Mission Systems' services are consistent with, and/or superior to, industry best practices

Candidates must demonstrate passion for innovation, a sophisticated understanding of various engineering systems and the ability to further advance General Dynamics Mission Systems technology.

The Undersea Cable Sr Advanced Systems Engineer position requires a a master's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Systems, or Computer Engineering or the equivalent, and a minimum of ten years of related experience. Applicants with a master's degree and a minimum of eight years of related experience are also eligible.

Department of Defense TS/SCI/Poly security clearance is required at time of hire. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.

The successful Undersea Cable Deployment Sr Advanced Systems Engineer candidate must have:

  • Experience in the field of submarine cable deployment for telecommunications, ocean research, oil industry, or government applications

  • Knowledge of cable design and manufacturing and cable system design, including repeaters, power supply, and installation planning such as cable route development, ship cable load-out calculations, and cable handling equipment specifications .

  • Knowledge of fiber optic communication specifications, handling and splicing techniques, end-to-end system design, and test .

  • Knowledge of oceanography and weather-related ocean phenomena sufficient to support system planning

  • Ability to travel aboard ocean survey or cable laying ships in open ocean and coastal regions.

  • Experience with schedule and cost responsibility and with providing technical direction to engineering resources and subcontractors on systems development programs.

  • Experience in full engineering lifecycle to include: concept development, customer engagement and shaping, solution and proposal creation, design, integration, test, verification, validation, logistics, training, sustainment and obsolescence handling

  • Experience designing, specifying requirements, inspecting, verifying, and debugging undersea systems

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and be comfortable briefing senior leaders both within the company and the customer's organization

  • Experience and in-depth technical knowledge in the following areas:

    • Sub-sea communications systems and network design. In particular, long haul optical transmission systems.

    • Deployment equipment and techniques used for installing sub-sea communications systems and networks.

    • Demonstrated experience in fault tolerant design and reliability impacts on system life and system availability.
