About the Business Line
Our team of environment specialists offers clients expertise in air quality, impact analysis and permitting, environmental health and safety management consulting/due diligence, remediation consulting/engineering and construction/site restoration, specialty and emerging technologies, waste services and water and natural resources.

Job Summary
AECOM's Neighbourhood Planning Project Team is made up of staff principally from the Environment and Design, Planning and Economics divisions. We have an expanding workload and currently provide direct technical support to over 100 ambitious neighbourhood planning groups around England. We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior or Principal Consultant, depending on experience, who will join a dedicated team to lead on our Evidence Base and Policy Reviews as well as making a significant contribution to Housing Needs Assessments and on occasion other work, including non-neighbourhood planning projects.

Location of this role is likely to be London (Aldgate), however other office locations around the UK can also be considered.

As an experienced planning or housing consultant, ideally with a relevant post graduate qualification and professional membership (CIH, MRTPI), you will join our established team to support Directors and Associates in both neighbourhood & local planning support as well as being able to make a contribution to the production of planning and environment policy studies, masterplans, planning strategies, other outputs in relation to planning and commissions for public, community and private sector clients.

This role would suit someone with a background in research, community planning, housing or regeneration with extensive experience in a local planning authority or planning consultancy.

Current projects within the neighbourhood planning team include, community infrastructure planning in London, masterplanning in market towns, housing needs assessments for urban parishes and evidence and policy reviews for complex neighbourhood plans with multi-themed policies.

In the longer term there will also be opportunities to work on Local Plan studies, masterplanning of sustainable urban extensions for new communities, settlement and sub-regional level growth studies and planning strategies for previously developed land across the UK.

The appointed person will play a key policy and development role in the continued evolution of this exciting workstream for AECOM.

This will include:

Leading on the provision and development of our Evidence Base and Policy Reviews, including steering conclusions and learning from each report, taking responsibility for final drafts, liaison with qualifying bodies, reviewing methodology and responding to client queries.

Working closely with the current Housing Needs Technical Lead, writing and/or supervising the assembly of Housing Needs Assessments for a wide variety of groups in urban and rural areas. Taking responsibility for final drafts, liaison with qualifying bodies, responding to client queries and reviewing methodology together with the technical lead.

Building budgets for each piece of work and supporting the Project Co-ordinator and Project Manager and Project Director in terms of project administration and management.

Advising on diagnostics for the Supporting Communities Project, particularly in relation to Evidence and Policy Reviews and Housing Needs Assessments.

Working closely with and accountable to the Project Director, leading on the development and marketing of our direct work with neighbourhood planning groups, assembling bids where necessary and liaising with clients and organising project teams.

Contributing to the wider work of the Environment and Urban Design and Plan-Making Teams, particularly in terms of planning policy, housing and regeneration issues.

Minimum Requirements
The successful candidate will have an excellent appreciation of the UK planning system and housing policy framework as well as the current planning and/or housing growth agenda and key pressures. With a strong appreciation of the links between people, place, communities facing change, the environment and the economy.

The role offers an exciting opportunity to work alongside communities on the one hand and multi-disciplinary planning and design teams on the other.

Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential, as are research skills and the ability to be able to work closely with other members of a multi-disciplinary team. Some management experience would be also an advantage

Preferred Qualifications
A professional qualification in Town Planning or Housing, with membership of one or both of RTPI and CIH.
Ideally a higher qualification in planning, housing or a related discipline.
