Control Systems Engineer (London)


The Customer Support Engineering team supports the operation and maintenance of OEM and Non OEM Gas Turbines, Steam Turbines, Generators, Control Systems, and Auxiliary Systems. The team is dedicated for engineering support during scheduled/forced outage, during operation as well as for new business development or existing business expansion while working closely with programme management, commercial and tendering team. The team is also engaged with customers to ensure reliability, availability and safety of the operating assets.

The Controls Engineer will be responsible for problem resolution for our customers related to OEM (Netmation / HIACS) and non OEM (Honeywell, Advant, S7, Mark VI. Ovation, ABB.) control systems.

Being multi-disciplinary engineering team, it will be expected to have flexibility to learn gas turbine, steam turbine, and generator operational aspects in addition to primary job responsibilities.

The position will be responsible for assisting the Engineering Manager and engineering team for various customer support engineering activities.

Job Description:

+ Support the operation and maintenance of control systems for gas turbines, steam turbines, generators and relevant auxiliary systems during scheduled/forced outage as well as during the normal operation.
+ Support the operation and maintenance of non-OEM control systems for gas turbines, steam turbines, generators and relevant auxiliary systems during scheduled/forced outage as well as during the normal operation.
+ Prepare and write controls system technical reports, technical procedures, etc. following the instruction of the Engineering Manager.
+ Verify, troubleshoot, and maintain the correct functioning of varies control systems including relevant auxiliary systems, and instrumentation

+ Read and write drawings, logic diagrams and technical manuals to appropriately identify the steps needed to allow repair and adjustment of mechanical, electrical, electronic and control components/process systems
+ Design, Install and upgrade Hardware and software of a control system
+ Carry out commissioning activities on-site.
+ Support creation of RFQs and POs, etc. following the instructions of the Engineering Manager.
+ Respond to internal and external customers’ requests for technical issue resolution using technical product knowledge and analytical skills while adhering to sound engineering principles, standards, practices, and procedures.

+ Escalate issues as required acting as the liaison between the field and design teams to drive specific technical resolution and to help engineering identify and drive corrective actions as well as preventive measures.
+ Establish and maintain relationships with customers to make customer understand technical issues/requirements and address them in timely manner.
+ Lead and manage root cause analysis for technical issues.
+ Document technical data generated by the assigned project consistent with engineering policies and procedures.
+ Prepare technical presentations for customers ensuring the timely communication of significant issues or developments.
+ Travel to customer locations to support customer technical review meetings.
+ To support unplanned/forced outages to meet availability goal.

+ To collaborate with technical proposal engineer for new business development by providing all necessary technical information and documentation.
+ Prepare technical specifications for vendors/suppliers for any local procurement of parts/components and to support procurement team for vendor qualifications.
+ Prepare control system training documents for both internal and external customer
+ Prepare control system upgrade menus based on latest technology to expand the business

Person Specification:

+ Bachelor’s Degree or above in Mechanical/Electrical/I&C Engineering is preferred with proven experience in logic design, hardware and software installation, control system architecture, design, simulation and operational aspects of variety of digital control systems.
+ Proficient knowledge on digital control systems involved in power plant operations such as OEM (Netmation / HIACS) and non EOM (Honeywell, Advant, S7, Mark VI. Ovation, ABB.) Control systems, etc. and related troubleshooting, maintenance, monitoring and diagnostics, etc.
+ Previous experience on distributed control systems, machine controllers, excitation systems, instrumentation, etc. for large rotating machines.
+ Demonstrated knowledge and ability to program and trouble-shoot controls system both software and hardware

+ Knowledge of gas turbine, steam turbine, and generator operation
+ Experience in developing and writing specifications and/or proposals.
+ Effective customer service skills and Strong organizational skills.
+ Strong analytical and problem solving ability and adept at communicating with all levels of the organization.
+ Proficient technical report writing and communication skills.
+ Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team having people with different cultures and nationalities.
+ Good knowledge of MS Office suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, simulation software
+ Fluency in business English, knowledge of Japanese would be an advantage but not essential.
