Senior Night Manager|
Thales have recently secured a contract from London Underground to modernise four lines of the existing network (Circle, District, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan) with an automated train control system (ATS) with order value of £770M. Known as 4LM, the project will be executed over the next 5 years and will increase both reliability and capacity of the existing infrastructure giving a safe and comfortable mode of transport for London’s increasing population. The project is the largest signalling contract ever placed worldwide and critical to enabling workforce movement for the London / UK economy. The project complements the existing URS portfolio including JNUP, JL2, NLE, Connect & DLR
The Field Operations team of Thales will be responsible for deploying the target system into the underground network with minimum impact to existing services. A large element of the work will be executed during ‘engineering hours’ during night shifts.
As part of the Field Operations team a Senior Night Manager is now required to be the single point of contact between the day management team and the management of the Night Team to enable Field Operations work.
Primary Purpose of the Role:
The Senior Night Manager role is a leadership role and provides direction of the night team in cooperation with the day management team.
Reporting to the Head of Field Operations, you will be responsible for the management of the Field Operations Night Team for the 4LM contract plus support of the other Thales URS contracts (e.g. WCC, DLR, JL2 etc).
The role of Senior Night Manager is critical to the successful coordination of staff for the deployment and testing of the 4LM signalling upgrade system plus associated Test Tracks, Depot Commissioning Areas, Control Centres and training facilities. The night team will peak at 250 heads and a strong management head is essential to ensuring a safe, efficient and effective execution of the program with clear lines of communication both throughout the night team and to the day team.
In addition, the installation subcontractor teams (3 off) will peak at 300 heads. Interaction with the Thales installation managers will be required to ensure smooth operations.
The Senior Night Manager will be the head of the Field Ops night team ensuring all project requirements are met and will form part of the overall night management team including Safety, Quality, QS, Install and T&C Technical Managers.
The Senior Night Manager will also be responsible for the matrix management of the night team ensuring people management requirements are met.
The role requires interfacing with many internal stakeholders and cross portfolio functions working days such as Operations Managers, Installation Managers, Work Package Managers, Works Planners, TiC’s and HR.
Key Responsibilities and Tasks:
Leadership and development of the night team to ensure it has the required resources, skills and attitudes.
Excellent Safety culture maintained across the team
Ensure adherence of the team to the working processes and procedures.
Provide direction to ensure all assigned work is completed to schedule, to budget (agreed hours) and to quality. Ensure any potential compensation events are fed back to the day team.
Work with the team to identify continuous improvement opportunities and manage the change as appropriate. Ensure rework cycles are minimised and lessons learnt deployed.
Perform Field Ops and Safety briefings
Management of Night Test teams (numbers/tracking)
Close working with the departmental night heads – safety, QA/QC, Install etc.
Supervise and ensure the following safety related works are completed correctly:-
Ensure all Safety standards, policies and procedures are followed.
Support to the management team when carrying out fault/incident investigations
Direct the team and ensure the following monitoring / reporting is achieved on time:-
Submission of project dashboard reports as required by the field ops manager or CTIC
Generation of periodic KPI statistics for review meetings – test rates / access / install targets etc
Coordinate the generation of on-site inspection reports for T&C management and project management team
Continuously review night management processes to ensure they remain suitable and sufficient
Work with the night team leads to ensure the following is executed:-
All works is coordinated, understood and executed effectively and efficiently.
Report on PWT allocation & Access queries.
Support Installation team leads as required – awareness of any subcontractor activities on site.
Ensure facilities management is met – open/secure facility & fire-warden/first aider.
Provide matrix management of the team to ensure the following requirements are delivered:-
Timesheet / Mytime support and ensure completion
Sickness management - return to work forms
Medication queries HML
Vehicle tracking & Fors Driver Management support
Disciplinaries, grievances, performance management etc
Coordinate and support the Stores Manager as follows :-
Ensure Tool Management & Calibration is delivered
Material control & tracking
ensuring compliance to railway standards, and appropriate HSE and quality standards
Provision of progress reporting to project or function for T&C night activities
Key performance Indicators against Responsibilities and Tasks:
Experience in working in a safety critical environment.
Experience of managing and developing large groups of people in a dynamic environment
Management of Night Test teams (competence etc)
Excellent communication skills & conflict management expertise
Ensure that all relevant information has been distributed to the right people within the team.
Substantial Railway and/or construction experience
Man Management experience
Degree / HND / HNC in engineering related subject or relevant experience.
Holder of an appropriate IRSE license
Hours / Working Pattern:
The role is predominantly on Nights with infrequent requirements to work day (as the project dictates).
Predominantly the working pattern is Monday through Friday with reasonable notice giving when Sunday through Thursday as required.
37 hours per week. Basic hours are 7.4 per night with core hours 23:00 though 06:30
Additional hours/effort will be required to successfully execute the role as expected with a senior position
