Responsibilities for this Position:

General Dynamics Mission Systems (GDMS), a market leader and technology innovator, is seeking talented professionals to deliver cutting edge solutions to our customers.

Basic Function

The primary purpose of the Toolmaker is to fabricate precision tooling based on the tool design drawings, the requirements of a process, the demand of parts needing holding or alignment and/or other manufacturing requirements as defined.

Essential Functions

  • Plan and layout work from engineering drawings, sketches, or other work specifications, applying shop mathematics.
  • Plan the setup and operation of all types of machine shop tools, considering types of material, tolerances, types of cutting tools, coolants, lubricants and machine tool feeds and speeds
  • Sets up and operates machine tools, such as lathe, milling machine, and grinder, to machine parts to specifications and verifies conformance of machined parts to specifications
  • Verifies dimensions and alignment, using measuring instruments such as micrometers, height gauges, and gauge blocks.
  • Examines standard tools and modifies tools as required
  • Performs necessary handwork such as filing, grinding and lapping to finish and assemble parts
  • Troubleshoots existing tooling and fixtures for production departments
  • Fits and assembles jigs, fixtures, tools and dies
  • Performs mold modifications and repairs
  • Assures that due dates are met for all internal requests
  • Provides recommendations for tool design enhancements

  • Education, prior work experience and specialized skills and knowledge: The position will require the toolmaker to be able to read and understand engineering drawings, work instructions and assembly specifications. Must have the ability to apply shop mathematics. Proficiency in operating all tool shop machinery and the use of precision measuring devices required.

  • Equipment and Machinery used: Hand tools, molds, gauges, fixtures, milling machines, lathes, grinders and measuring devices

  • Other (e.g., customer contact or access to confidential information): Must be able to work as part of a team and available to work overtime as required.
  • Physical environment/working conditions: This position is in the tool room and will involve sitting, standing, walking, and moderate lifting. Non-toxic chemicals and solvents may be used in the tooling process.

Basic Qualifications:


  • Minimum 5 years Toolmaker experience is required in a similar manufacturing environment
  • Must be able to read/understand complex engineering drawings, sketches and verbal instructions for tool design
  • Ability to understand and apply shop math
  • Must be proficient in the operation of all tools used in a standard machine - End Mill, Lathe, Surface Grinder and the use of precision measuring instruments/devices
  • Basic level programing of CNC equipment in a tool shop
  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent
  • Must be fluent in English (speak, read and write)
