We are looking for a Materials Engineer to join our Materials Performance team based in Derby.

Purpose of the job:
To provide Materials, Fire Safety and Environmental engineering services to Derby Projects, Bids and R&D such that the product:
• is compatible with the infrastructure/environment
• is demonstrably compliant with contractual and legal requirements; and
• is Acceptable with respect to the specialism
The role is to ensure that Materials, Fire Safety and Environmental Compliance is managed in the design of Bombardier's products (primarily UK RS, but includes international work packages) and is demonstrated as such to achieve acceptance by Bombardier's client.
The holder of this position is responsible for the performance of activities on a project with a budget in some cases in excess of 40,000 engineering hours and £2 million ODCs.
At an overall level, the Materials Engineer is responsible for implementing Materials, Fire Safety and Environmental Compliance strategy on a project. The impact of an error is:
• Large delays in the acceptance and delivery of the product.
• Extensive and costly modifications to built products.
• Product liability claims on Bombardier either under Civil or Criminal Law in the event of an accident occurring.

  • Materials-based Degree and/or Chartered status essential, Masters Degree desirable
  • Significant experience with materials engineering (particularly metallurgy and corrosion, polymers, rubbers, adhesives, sealants, paints). System Integration experience essential, System Architectural understanding essential.
  • Detailed knowledge of the application of materials and processing techniques for coatings, composites and adhesive bonding together with a good knowledge and understanding of current national & international validation methods. Preferable experience of the application of this knowledge in the transportation industry (ideally railway).
  • Good understanding of materials & fire safety principles and the ability to manage and validate the fire performance of vehicles in a railway environment would be beneficial. Experience of advanced computational fluid mechanics techniques for the assessment of fire safety performance would be an advantage.
  • Understanding of the (generic) engineering design process. Significant experience and hands on delivery of the design, analysis, development, testing and delivery of engineering solutions that solve complex requirements.
  • Rail experience desirable. Knowledge of the railway approvals process, railway legislation and applicable rolling stock standards would be beneficial.
  • Significant experience and hands on delivery of the design, analysis, development, testing and delivery of engineering solutions that solve complex requirements.
  • Ability to provide cost and schedule estimates on complicated engineering programs. Strong and consistent track record of delivery.
  • Ability to provide technical expertise in Materials Engineering. Ability to provide technical expertise in fire safety and compliance to environmental legislation would be beneficial.
  • Ability to use this technical knowledge in the support of other departments (engineering, production, procurement, projects) and the development of less experienced engineering personnel.
    Intermediate/Advanced Microsoft Word and Excel skills.
