We provide professional services in areas such as aviation, transit, freight rail, highways and bridges, planning, and ports and marine. Job Summary
AECOM is looking to recruit a Business Development Director for our Transportation business with experience in leading the development of business opportunities and key relationships in the South East of England. The successful candidate will take on the leadership and coordination of all major Cross-Sector (Highways, Network and Traffic Operations, Bridges and Structures and Rail) opportunities and relationships.

The AECOM Transportation team provides concept and preliminary design, network management, detailed design, project delivery and operational maintenance on a wide range of projects for national agencies, local authorities and civil engineering contractors. AECOM Transportation also leads cross Business Line multi-disciplinary projects and supports other AECOM business lines where their projects have a transport interface.

The successful candidate will be joining a growing team that is actively involved in the delivery of projects and services to a range of clients including:
  • Highways England
  • Transport for London
  • Network Rail
  • Civil Engineering Contractors
  • SE Local Authorities and London Boroughs

You will have proven business development, team leadership, project delivery and business management experience within a commercial environment. The role would suit a self-motivated individual looking to advance their career as part of a dynamic European leadership team.

The role will focus on the South East market and the individual will work closely with the Transportation Sector Leaders to exploit opportunities in this buoyant market.

Job Responsibilities:
Health & Safety
To provide Health & Safety leadership consistent with AECOM's safety policies and procedures to deliver a safe and healthy working environment and ensure that AECOM's clients and collaborators are aware that Safety in a core value of AECOM.

Business Development
  • To lead on cross-Sector Transportation business development activities in the South East region and to ensure business targets are met.
  • To develop sound client relationships with key South East clients, being alert to commercial opportunities.
  • To identify strategies and develop emerging opportunities, and to fully exploit them.
  • To lead, or assist with, the preparation of major bids and proposals.
  • Financial Management
  • To lead on the management of backlog of work in the Transportation Sectors in the South East.
  • To work closely with the Transportation Sector Leaders to ensure wider Sector KPIs are met.
  • Resource Management
  • To be responsible for a cross-Sector business development team in based in the South East, which will be resourced from the Strategic Highways, Network and Traffic Operations, Bridges and Structures and Rail Sectors.
  • Risk Management
  • To develop and maintain a philosophy and attitude of sound risk management through comprehensive reviews of contractual risk on pursuits, conformity with the Legal Reference Guide and the continuing development of good practice; and to assist in the wider corporate and management functions of the Civil and Infrastructure business to ensure continuing growth and development of the South East business overall.
  • Assist in the wider corporate and management functions of the Transportation business line to ensure continuing growth and development overall. This includes a requirement to work flexibly across the UK and other AECOM geographies if required to liaise with the wider business.

Minimum Requirements
  • Strong links to key AECOM clients including Highways England, Transport for London, Network Rail, Civil Engineering Contractors and Local Authorities. Experience of working within one of these environments would also be beneficial, but not essential.
  • A proven track record in business development and team leadership.
  • A successful track record of delivery of bids and proposals.
  • An ability to deal directly with clients and engage and influence at a senior level within client organisations.
  • Demonstrable leadership and business management experience.
  • A good industry profile, the gravitas to represent AECOM with major clients.
  • Excellent technical and communication skills.
  • A flexible approach to supporting client relationship and business development activities across UK and Ireland plus wider AECOM geographies.
  • A proven ability of managing and growing a team, with strong leadership skills and the ability to develop and maintain a highly motivated team.
  • Strong project delivery skills with an ability to effectively manage project commercial risks.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
  • Chartered member of relevant professional body.
