Job Summary
We are currently recruiting for a Senior Bridge Engineer with experience of bridge design, inspection, assessment and refurbishment schemes, to join our busy and expanding experienced Newcastle Bridges team.

Our Newcastle office has an established track record of successfully delivering bridge engineering schemes for over 75 years, mainly in the North East but also throughout the UK and overseas. The team provides assessment, concept, feasibility, preliminary and detailed designs on a wide range of schemes, either as standalone bridge commissions or as part of multidisciplinary major projects. Our clients are from the private and public sector and include long term Framework Agreements with numerous North East Local Authorities together with Design and Build commissions for many major Contractors.

Recently won projects include a major UK 5 year rail network infrastructure framework assessment contract and we are at present completing the design of the major dualling of the A1 in North Yorkshire. In addition to the significant long term commissions on bridge assessment and inspection, principally in the rail environment, our initial assessment often leads to the requirement for the design of the refurbishment, strengthening or replacement.

As a Senior Bridge Engineer you will have the following daily responsibilities:
  • Undertake and manage rail and road bridges and associated structural engineering schemes from inspection and assessment, feasibility through to detailed design.
  • Take responsibility for the contribution of Graduate Engineers and Technicians as appropriate.
  • Responsible for production through to client sign off of Technical Approval documentation.
  • Hands on technical design on road and/or rail structures.
  • Hands on assessment of road and/or rail structures.
  • Structural inspections and reporting.
  • Excellent technical and communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Client liaison.
  • Production of tenders including quality documentation and costings.
  • Project Management including programme and resource monitoring, quality control, technical management and delivery.

Minimum Requirements
  • Significant experience with bridge and related structural inspection assessment and design schemes.
  • Knowledge of Euro codes.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCad.
  • Experience in the design of concrete, steel, timber and masonry structures.
  • Proven design and project management experience delivering to quality, time and budget.
  • Experience in road, rail and water bridge projects.
  • Experience in working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • High level technical skills in current inspection, assessment and design and be able to lead teams of graduate and senior engineers in such projects.
  • Previous exposure with clients of both national and local authorities, together with major contractors.
  • Previous site based experience.
  • Ability to manage staff and project Health and Safety responsibilities including compliance with CDM legislation.
  • You will have a current clean driving license and be willing to travel throughout the UK to visit sites.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Degree educated or equivalent in a relevant subject such as Bridge, Civil or Structural Engineering.
