Field Support Engineer / Field Service Engineer - Military Communications, Electronic Warfare, EW Data.

Our client requires excellent knowledge of military communications bearers and systems.
Familiarity with EW data and its uses within the MoD.
Must be able to obtain and maintain DV STRAP Clearance.

The three main requirements for this role are as follows:
System Administrator (SA) for Oracle (Solaris 11) clustered server Systems.
SME Support for the associated System Integration Laboratory (SIL) network, including network and radio systems.
Provision of SME support to Help Desk engineers.

The Field Support Engineer will be responsible for:
Hands-on system administration support, system maintenance and operational support of all hardware and software associated with the System while complying with Configuration Management obligations.
Support multiple computer operating systems in a heterogeneous environment.
Assist with installations of server equipment and associated network devices, adhering to all local and organisational processes.
Provide system administration and network support of the System using Microsoft Windows, Oracle Solaris Operating System (OS) and networking OS (e.g. Cisco IOS, McAfee, and Juniper).
Research, troubleshoot and reporting issues to the Help Desk on a 24/7 basis.
Work with subject matter experts to identify and resolve technical and performance issues with the System.
Apply software upgrades and patches; apply security updates.
Act as a front-line customer interface for the programme at the customer site.

The Field Support Engineer duties include:
Maintain close liaison with external agencies, including US Authorities, to enable the company to provide advice to the Customer in the event of service outages.
Assess potential changes to systems and recommend how these systems could be fielded.
Installation and testing of hardware changes and software patches. This includes Solaris and Windows systems.
Act as 1st, 2nd and 3rd line support for the fielded Systems.
Configuration of new equipment and reconfiguring network systems.
Assist in conducting System Administration duties for the SIL including:
Installation of all software.
Configuring databases.
Password allocations.
Crypto change-overs.
Conduct system back up procedures and disaster recovery processes as they affect the System.
Manage day to day security aspects iaw current Security Accreditation.
Manage the repair and upgrade of project hardware. This may include returning equipment to external companies or installing components within the SIL.

Qualifications required for this role:
Qualified to Degree level (preferably Engineering, Computer Science, Maths or Physics) or equivalent. Alternatively, a recognised career development record within the MoD will be considered (must have achieved a minimum of Grade C/SNCO rank).

5 to 10 years' experience (preferably Military) required in a relevant IT/support environment (refer to Essential and Desirable requirements).

Essential Requirements:
Must be able to hold DV clearance and be a US, Australian, New Zealand, Canadian or UK citizen.
Systems Administration experience with the following Operating Systems: Oracle/Sun Solaris and Microsoft Windows.
Working knowledge of the following file systems: UFS, ZFS, NFS, and NTFS.
Working knowledge of common TCP/IP protocols such as http, https, ntp, ssh.
Ability to document processes and work within a quality improvement environment
Ability to maintain positive and healthy relationships with all project team members and customers.
Understanding of server, application and network security hardening and validation techniques.
Values-based personality with the ability to work in a team environment.
Hands-on knowledge of networking infrastructure products such as servers, switches, firewalls and routers.
Familiarity with web products and servers such as - Web servers, URL, Browsers, Internet Performance tools, Web search engines, Directory services, Switching technologies, Internet security services.
Must have excellent interpersonal, communication, and written skills
Strong work ethic, takes ownership of issues with flexibility to work weekend and evenings as needed.

Experience working with:
Oracle Sun Cluster Software
Veritas NetBackup
SAN and NAS technologies
Cisco IOS and configuration
Update, backup, and restore application/tools such as:
Oracle Sun Solaris LiveUpgrade
Unified archives
zfs snapshots
Shell scripts (bash, sh, Batch Scripts)
Red Hat Enterprise Linux OS

Personal Attributes
Strong team player, able to manage work-load with minimal supervision, good communication skills. Ability to work using own initiative and be able to positively influence to promote the System.
Training Opportunities
The Field Support Engineer will work closely with the existing Engineer to gain and understand the technical workings of the System, user requirements, common issues and communications networks.

Business Area Specific Requirements
Knowledge of military communications bearers and systems.
Familiarity with EW data and its uses within the MoD.
Ability to obtain and maintain DV STRAP Clearance.
