SQL Database Administrator

As a DBA you will be working in a small team responsible for the uptime and maintenance of all of our production Microsoft SQL Server instances and the security and integrity of the databases hosted on them. You will need to be comfortable working with SQL Server from version 2008 up to and including 2014, planning upgrades to SQL Server 2016 will also be a part of the role. In addition to managing the production infrastructure you will also be working with various development teams around the business supporting their activities by performing code reviews, releases and performance tuning where required. The servers you will be responsible for support a wide variety of systems including web applications, web services, data warehouses and ISV applications, therefore you should be able to work with both OLTP and OLAP systems. We use a variety of methods for achieving HA and DR such as clustering, AlwaysOn availability groups and log shipping so proficiency in setting up, managing and maintaining these types of systems is essential.

Main Duties

- Maintaining the uptime and availability of our SQL estate
- Ensuring the integrity of the databases across the environment
- Securing data by ensuring systems are adequately patched, permissions models are correct and appropriate firewall rules are in place
- Ensuring that data is protected from loss through appropriate backup and disaster recovery strategies
- Working alongside development teams, providing support and guidance where required
- Setting up new SQL servers as required, from Windows OS configuration through to application installation and configuration
- Participate in a 24/7 on-call rota.
- Occasionally carry out changes outside of normal working hours including weekends
- Ensuring compliance with Microsoft licensing rules
- Ensuring that code released to production is of sufficient quality and is deployed in a predictable and reliable manner
- Using monitoring tools to identify poorly performing code and either escalate to the appropriate development team or engage in performance tuning as appropriate
- Support both OLTP and OLAP systems, including SQL Server Analysis Services cubes
- Managing and maintaining SQL Server Reporting Services installations, including creating and deploying reports

Experience And Skills



- Database administration for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 +
- Creating and maintaining technical documentation
- Working in a change control environment
- Experience of managing clustered instances and AlwaysOn availability groups
- Backup and recovery of SQL Server databases, including log shipping
- Using monitoring tools such as SolarWinds to identify and diagnose SQL Server issues


- Experience using the RedGate suite of tools such as SQL Backup, Compare and Data Generator
- Providing out-of-hours emergency support
- Windows Server Administration
- Working in a global environment with teams in numerous time zones
- Experience with using Commvault managed backup Solutions
- Virtual machines running on vmWare ESX and vSphere
- SAN Environments such as NetApp
- Reporting tools such as IBM Cognos or Tableau etc
- Using the Atlassian product suite
- Experience with AWS DynamoDB
- Working within the security industry



- Ability to quickly adapt to working on a wide variety of different systems

- Strong communication skills both verbally and in writing


- PowerShell scripting
- Project management
- Tuning T-SQL queries to improve performance
- Ability to manage other RDBMS solutions such as PostgreSQL and MySQL
- Amazon Web Services administration
