The purpose of the position is to service tooling and ancillary equipment to ensure the smooth and continuous running of the manufacturing area. Although the workshop personnel may be asked to assist on the production line, their normal duties are carried out under the instruction of the Maintenance Supervisor with the main aim of servicing the requirements of the manufacturing process and therefore assisting the Plant to meet budget requirements.

The shift pattern could either be a 12 hours days/nights rota or 42 hours a week Mon to Fri day rota depending on the department needs.

Nature and scope

Reporting to the Electrical Supervisor, key responsibilities include:

" Ensuring the maximum efficiency from all electrical equipment by means of safe preventative maintenance.
" Acting on own authority and initiative on day to day matters.
" Improvements to all electrical equipment and services.
" Assisting with the execution of plant engineering projects from start to completion.
" Co-ordinating the safe repair and maintenance of electrical and electronic equipment within the plant.
" Keeping abreast of any new equipment or processes that are relevant to our particular industry.
" Controlling all electrical costs within agreed budget costs.
" Ensuring that the most competitive quotations are obtained for all electrical and electronic purchases and that purchasing decisions are made on the best price/quality/safety ratio in the company's interest.
" Maintaining an adequate inventory of spares for electrical and electronic equipment.
" Supplying administration department with a breakdown of labour and material costs for the electrical part of all capital and C&A CER's.
" Compiling budgets for the electrical part of capital projects with assistance from head office engineering department.
" Recruiting, selecting and, where necessary, training all electricians, including safety.
" Monitoring and assessing contract work to ensure results are to the required company standards.
" Monitoring the progress of electrical or mechanical/electrical apprentices during training.
" Ensuring that electrical risk assessments are completed and reviewed as necessary.
" Ensuring that electrical risk assessments are completed and reviewed as necessary.
" Encourage, by their conduct, a conscientious attitude to the environment.
" Instruct all new employees, on the known hazards and any necessary precautions of which they should be aware.
" Participate in workplace inspections
" Ad hoc project work as required

Requirements for this position

" Degree or equivalent in an Engineering Discipline
Preferably a post-graduate diploma (e.g., MSc Manufacturing science)
" Problem solving / total quality skills
" A Manufacturing/Engineering background in a high speed, high volume continuous process
" Successful track record in man management
" Experience of managing budgets and contracts
" Proven record of achievement
" A management style heavily orientated to training and coaching
" Good computer skills - ability to manage via computerised data
" Working knowledge of relevant Legislation e.g. Electricity at work regulations 1989

The above job description is the minimum requirement for this job position. It is also expected that the person will carry out any task requested by a supervisor or any task needed to improve the general performance of the Plant taking due account of skills and safety. 80% of the time is spent working in the workshop; the other 20% of the time is working on the shop floor.


" Apprenticeship in a Manufacturing Mechanical Engineering discipline.
" Computer literacy.
" Working knowledge of Health and Safety work practises.
" A manufacturing background in a high speed, high volume continuous process.
" Experience of working in a workshop environment and knowledge of machine shop processes and practices.
" Experience of preventative and planned maintenance on workshop and production equipment.
" Have experience of working on some of the following: compressors, boilers, water tanks, rollers, pumps, gearboxes, conveyors, pinchains, shafts, grinders, lathes, manual millers.
" The ability to assist with breakdowns and line conversions.
" Strong toolmaking skills.
" Can demonstrate the ability to work precisely with strong attention to detail.
" A team player with strong problem solving and analytical skills, with the ability to work alone under their own initiative.
" The ability to work well under pressure and organise and prioritise their work load.
" Ability to read and follow SOPs and complete paperwork accurately and thoroughly.
" A basic knowledge of quality and hygiene systems would be advantageous
