Our client is one of the leading rail infrastructure suppliers in the UK. From feasibility studies, planning and design through to implementation and asset management, they provide multi-disciplinary rail infrastructure services across the lifecycle of rail assets. Their expertise covers electrification, track, power, signalling, civils, specialist rail plant, railway systems and technologies.

They deliver design and engineering services in Electrification, Permanent Way and Civil Engineering for railways, offering a full range of support through a project life cycle from feasibility studies to detailed design and beyond.

Role Overview

Our Client has an exciting opportunity for a Project Engineer to join the Rail Division to be based in London. The position will form part of one of the most complex and challenging programmes of work on Network Rail infrastructure at present. Specifically as part of the Track Team, delivering works in and around London Bridge Station. The Project Engineer will actively manage and be responsible for the Engineering delivery and compliance of assigned Track works to scope and budget ensuring that all safety, quality and environmental requirements are satisfied. Co-ordinate works to align with other delivery partners to ensure Major Civils, Signalling Civils, Signalling, Electrification and Structure Strengthening Programmes are all maintained to the benefit of the overall Project.


• Produce time/chainage and bar chart programmes aided by staging diagrams for core work activities
• Produce train matrix planning for stageworks using spoil and ballast calculations
• Production of the WPP & Mitigation plans for stageworks, in particular activities that include track removal, excavation, re-ballasting, track replacement and tamping & stressing
• Plan within budgetary constraints resource, materials & equipment requirements
• Manage & co-ordinate the project delivery engineering team effectively and roster resource (internal & external) appropriately to deliver the project requirements
• Liaise with wider business to best utilise company resources
• Plan and optimise the work on a day to day basis
• Management of Critical Rail Temperatures (CRT) on all allocated sites
• Attend Technical liaison meetings (PDR) and conduct onwards briefing of technical requirements
• Manage the effective setting out of the renewal installation including the use of 3D control methods
• Manage the engineering compliance of core renewals with the result of achieving acceptable levels of Track Quality
• Monitor the accurate and consistent recording and delivery of the as-built details
• Liaise with the Project Manager and the Client to deliver a mutually successful conclusion to each Project
• Identify potential variations to contract and opportunities for added value to the Project Manager
• In conjunction with Site Manager effectively manage the utilisation of plant and equipment when working on site
• Ensure that work is completed and documents recorded in conjunction with the Network Rail standards & company procedures
• Ensure tools and equipment are maintained, calibrated and documented to required quality standards
• Populate resource schedules in line with programme requirements
• Ensure Health & Safety files are updated post works
Analyse, critique & utilise design data to:
• Critique the design and ensure buildability/feasibility
• Provide technical review of the Form A/B design to include: Lift, slue & cant analysis, staging feasibility, ballast calculation review using approved ballast calculator, IBJ locations, stressing considerations, structure loading and clearances applicable
• Liaise with the Client any concerns/technical queries regarding design data
• Formulate stressing plans
• Manipulate design data into standard BBR formats to enable effective setting out and installation; including generation of scheme sheets, test & inspection plans, as built sheets, tamping files & construction 3D design files (NA)
• Ensure TOC deliverables are completed and submitted within the required contract timescales

• Magnitude & Cost of repeat work required
• Acceptance of as-built details by the Client
• Calibration certificates

• TOC/Substantial Completion Certification within prescribed timescale

Role Requirements:

• Minimum Degree/HND Level in Civil Engineering or equivalent
• In-depth knowledge of P-Way design, 3D surveying and setting out
• Up-to-date knowledge of latest plant and equipment
• Proficient knowledge of project planning
• Broad on-site experience
• Safe systems of work
• Knowledge of ISO quality systems
• CDM Regulations awareness
• Computer proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point ,Ms Project


• 5yrs+ Technical Pway Experience
• Raising and removing speeds (Level IV)
• Computer literate - experience with Microsoft Project, CAD, 3D Design
• In-depth knowledge of P-Way design/construction methods and clearance and setting out software
• Design and tamping software knowledge
