The Role - Overview|
System automation engineers are required for efficiency and reliability improvements within the Project Delivery System Engineering Team. System Automation engineers are required to develop a good understanding of the system and methods used to execute tests in order to develop the automated solutions required by the complex system test rigs.
The jobholder will work within a team structure delivering detailed solutions with short to medium goals.
The jobholder will work closely with the System Test and Integration team to deliver the complex automation solutions required by various Delivery Projects. The role will balance strong technical coding skills with the ability to deliver within demanding timescales.
The jobholder will be expected to work within and to communicate effectively with members of the global Centres of Excellence in R&D, the appropriate Project Delivery Team, and possibly the external client.
The candidate will be expected to carry out or play a part in a number of the following tasks:
Sub-system specification and interface control and management
Participation in configuration management and control
Integration of component subsystems into a single system
Configuration and continuous improvement of test rigs in support of system integration.
Creation of new, and support of existing automation code modules written with AutoIT.
Authoring and execution of System Integration & Validation Test Specifications and Test Scripts
Other duties may include, but are not limited to:
Review and inspection of design submissions from external suppliers
Investigation and resolution of system or product level technical issues in hardware development, software development and system integration, cooperatively with safety engineering, verification and validation functions
Provide support to the production of system application manuals.
Experience with BASIC-like scripting languages designed for automating Windows environments and general scripting. Ideally using AutoIT.
Experience in high integrity systems engineering, preferably in real-time and/or embedded environments
Knowledge of having applied systems engineering practices in one or more mission critical, software intensive application domains
Thorough understanding of systems engineering and configuration management processes and related tools
Experience of working to industry quality and applicable standards
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Motivated, dependable and self-reliant
Excellent numerate skills
Experience in the development of Signalling Systems, Automatic Train Protection products, or other large programmable electronic systems
Familiarity with hardware and software lifecycles, associated tools, techniques and methodologies
Educated to degree level (or equivalent) in an engineering, scientific or numerate discipline
