Head of Software Engineering
As Head of Software Engineering for UK and Ireland you will be part of the IT Engineering function which is responsible for all aspects of the software development life cycle and oversee the delivery of our software solutions for our ecommerce systems, platforms in the retail stores, commercial and pricing systems, analytics, airline and call centre solutions.
As the Head of Software Engineering you will report to the Director of IT Engineering. You will be responsible for design, development and implementation of all software, the maturing of the technical teams, competency areas and processes. You will work in conjunction with the Delivery Managers of various portfolios to define quality assurance processes for the full SDLC process.
You will be leading all Solution Designers (Technical Architects), Systems Analysts, Tech Leads and Scrum Masters and developer resources. You will be responsible for maturing the competency areas and developing a highly skilled pool of technical leaders.
You will be responsible for developing Agile practices and instilling a DevOps culture into the business. You will be an advocate for and actively embrace cloud services to rapidly accelerate development principles and practices and reduce costs with the business. You will be creating technical centres of excellence within the technical teams, where documentation, technology usage and clear reporting enables strong technical decisions. You will demonstrate pre-emptive understanding of technical and industry specific market leading tools, strategy, and newcomers and provide quick insight into tool decision making and proof of concepts. You will clearly articulate these to the business in a manner to which they understand and ensure they are fully capable of making the decisions they need to. You will become the "go to person" for technical excellence and decision making based on software.

Deliver on time and with effective resource solutions, frameworks and teams that demonstrate value for money whilst managing technical delivery, financial and business stakeholders. You will continue to develop our software delivery lifecycle (SDLC) capabilities to enable parallel development streams and driving changes to market quicker. To do this, you will be a strong technical leader with the people skills to be able to work across business functions but also internally with the IT function.
As a strategic thinker, you will always review the current ways of working with a view to driving forward improvements and implementing best practice. Develop and plan system / software upgrades to keep our systems current as well as feed into the 5 year planning cycle by defining technology projects required to keep us competitive.
You will build strong, sustainable, knowledgeable, versatile and fun technical teams who are passionate about code, delivery and the products by hiring, mentoring and coaching technical staff. You will develop your teams to ensure that you can attract and retain talent within the organization. In order to achieve this, you will role model the Behaviours and inspire your teams to deliver the best for UK & I. As part of this, you will develop and maintain a high performing team that improves productivity and quality.
You will collaborate with IT architecture to ensure the roadmaps of future technology are met with appropriate processes, skills and tools. You will continue to develop the relationship with architecture and the implementation teams. You will partner with the IT Delivery Managers to ensure that the short term delivery challenges and long term technical capabilities are effectively balanced to the needs of the business, balancing technical prioritization and long term technical debt reduction with delivery plans.
You will work with the Business Change team and IT Portfolio Managers for roadmaps, business cases and strategy. You will deliver reporting to business stakeholders, IT PMO and project sponsors and ensure you are able to "tell the story" behind the reporting. You will also pro-actively build relationships within the IT Group especially with your counterpart in other source markets but also with Group Architecture and Group Security.
Third Party Suppliers
You will be utilizing our on-shore and off shore suppliers and ensuring there is appropriate balance between in-house, contractor and supplier teams. You will matrix manage capability of technical roles within the existing business focused delivery framework. This is a key part of the role as you will need to ensure that our partners are aware of processes and are committed to delivering with the team as if they are people.
You will have overall responsibility for up to 37 technical people with direct line management responsibility for four key areas, Solution Design (Technical Architect), System Analysts, Scrum Master and Tech Lead functions. Through your leadership team you will ensure that the teams are productive and providing high quality output. You will provide technical guidance, strategic direction and ownership and technical governance. You will also ensure your team define appropriate quality measures for all functions.
What We Are Looking For
• Technical education background, degree or masters in computer science
• Leading and managing development teams
• Deep experience and knowledge of the full software delivery life cycle
• Deep experience with development and delivery practices such as Agile, scrum, lean, kanban, xp, devops, pair programming, TDD, BDD etc.
• Exceptional verbal and written communication
• Ability to manage stakeholders up to a director and board level
• Experience of enterprise organisations and complex architectures
• Experience leading, managing and coaching under-performing and high-flying staff
• Deep technical experience of implementation, architecture and infrastructure
• A genuine love of technology, a desire to see how it works at a low level, with the ability to deliver business benefit
• Experience in vendor selection process
• Experience with significant online trading volumes and throughput as well typical high-street bricks and mortar infrastructure
