Senior Geotechnical Design Engineer - Manchester
A multi-award winning group, renowned for providing high calibre engineering design solutions, with a particular flair for the unique, innovative and challenging is currently recruiting a Senior Geotechnical Design Engineer, who will be willing to join a thriving and growing Manchester office for a large National and International Design consultancy group.
Job Responsibilities
• Prepare calculations, drawings and other documents and ensuring these are controlled during the execution of projects under your control
• prepare fee budgets, proposals and resource requirements for projects under your control
• specify and/or manage site examination and investigation works in a safe and effective manner
• identify and manage risks for the work under your control to agreed acceptable levels
• co-ordinate with other engineers both in the regional offices and between Groups
• develop the relationship between the company and new and existing clients in order to identify potential work
• support less experienced employees, sharing knowledge and acting as a coach or mentor
• maintain client relationships through liaison on proposals and project work
• manage and train colleagues undertaking project work
• contribute to the management of the company by participating in Action Groups (by invitation)
• comply with the Company Health & Safety procedures, Quality Assurance/Environmental Management system procedures and documentation, CDM Regulations, and general legislation
• provide support to the Quality Manager by participating in training, audits and providing feedback.

Skills & Experience Required
• A Masters in Civil Engineering or Geology with focus on engineering geology, civil engineering qualifications preferred or an MSc in geotechnical engineering and / or PhD in geotechnical engineering.
• Chartered Civil Engineer (preferred) or Chartered Geologist (a suitably experienced person on final approach to Chartered Review would be considered)
• Minimum of 10 years? experience post-graduation in Geotechnical design
• Minimum of 10 years? experience in geotechnical Civil engineering
• A supervisor of Junior Engineers
• Rail sector experience would be preferable.
• Geotechnical design to current UK standards, particularly Eurocodes, with general understanding of the geotechnical processes below and demonstrable project experience in at least three of the following:
o earthworks remediation
o earthworks design
o soil nailed slopes
o reinforced soil slopes and walls
o piled foundations
o shallow foundations
o embedded retaining walls
o gravity retaining walls
o deep basements
o ground improvement / treatment.
• Design, co-ordination and delivery of site investigations for rail and other civil engineering projects
• Use of computer software for the analysis of geotechnical problems, preferably to include the use of finite element or other numerical methods
• Production of design drawings and supervision of CAD technicians
• Ideally use of computer drawing software, e.g. AutoCAD or Microstation
• Geotechnical report writing both Ground Investigation and Geotechnical Design Reports to BS EN1997 and the production of design specifications

Personal Qualities
• Good communication skills both oral and written
• Ability to work on own and within a team to meet project, client, company and personal objectives
• Ability to supervise junior engineers and develop their technical abilities
• A challenging attitude to the solution of engineering problems in order to achieve cost effective designs and develop innovative solutions
• Awareness of the importance of costs and the need to complete projects on time and to budget
• Willingness to seek advice when unsure of how to tackle problems
• Willingness to help develop the geotechnical engineering capabilities of the office
