We are currently looking to recruit a 2 - 4 year PQE Employment lawyer to join Thales as an In-House Legal Counsel. Working on a 12 Month Fixed Term Contract you will form part of the Employment Law team within the UK Legal function in Crawley.

This is an important role, supporting all of the businesses in the UK, advising on a wide range of employment matters, both contentious and non-contentious. The job-holder will be required to ensure advice is in accordance with Thales Group / Thales UK policies and processes so that all Thales UK businesses are clear as to their compliance obligations.

Reporting to the General Counsel – UK Corporate Legal Service, the job-holder will work very closely with HR and provide support to a more junior employment lawyer within the team.

As part of a small in-house employment team, the job-holder will be required to engage directly with the businesses. This will include weekly travel to Weybridge (Once a week) and may include travelling on occasions to other UK sites to provide advice on matters or to present internal training.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks:
  • Supporting HR with reviewing and updating HR policies and procedures
  • Managing a precedent bank of employee documents on a HR database
  • Providing ad hoc advice to HR on a wide range of employment issues
  • Preparing and presenting training materials (presentations, case studies, workshops etc.)
  • Supporting the production of an internal HR newsletter
Tribunal claims
  • Running own caseload of claims
  • Leading negotiation strategies for settlement
  • Advocacy at preliminary hearings

M&A and Project Support. Advising on the employment law aspects of:
  • M&A activity
  • Insourcing/outsourcing of services
  • Restructuring projects
  • Commercial contracts
  • Change programmes
Industrial Relations
  • Advising on potential industrial relation disputes and union issues
  • Advising on immigration matters
Qualifications, Experience and Skills
  • Barrister or Solicitor with a degree (Law or other discipline). Any legal qualification must be recognised by the Law Society or Bar Council in England and Wales.
  • The ideal candidate will have trained and qualified with a reputable law firm, with considerable employment law experience.
  • The candidate must have a proven record of working as part of a team, as well as acting autonomously.
  • Excellent organisational skills are required in order to managing a broad caseload and prioritise demanding deadlines.
  • The ability to advise the businesses from both a legal and commercial standpoint, and offer pragmatic solutions, is essential.
  • Excellent presentation and communications skills are necessary.
  • Strong interpersonal skills are vital, as is the ability to work with people at different levels of the organisation, particularly senior management and HR.
  • The candidate must have the ability to influence key stakeholders, with a customer service-oriented approach.
  • Managing caseloads in a high pressured environment.
  • Experience of stakeholder management.
  • Supervising more junior team members.
