We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and experienced Principal Highways Engineer / Team Leader to support our North West multi-disciplinary engineering and project management teams on a permanent basis. You will have the opportunity to work on a range of nationally significant projects including strategic highways, local roads and rail for public and private sector clients. Our North West Division is over 110 strong and with a diverse range of ages, nationalities, experience and ambition - we require a strong Principal Engineer to grow our teams further, and help guide the development of others to bring excellence to our clients. This role will be particularly suited to someone with experience of Highways England projects, and the Highways England Project Control Framework, as much of the teams workload is centred around this. |
The key responsibilities and duties of the role are: * Deliver engineering services within an engineering environment which may include (but not limited to); scheme investigation, structural inspections, data collection and analysis, feasibility and outline design, detailed design, construction inspection / supervision, contract preparation, stakeholder engagement / management, statutory undertaker engagement / management, traffic order making; * Leading the delivery of technical teams and technical outputs within project teams; * To monitor the expenditure and financial commitment against projects and to ensure that Project Financial Reviews are undertaken and are completed, to show actual and forecast expenditure; * To effectively manage risk and to implement strategies, monitoring and reviewing procedures to minimise the impact of any occurrence against the project and the Business; * Build and maintain relationships with internal and external business partners, customers and clients; * Supervision and development of staff including the provision of technical advice; * Responsible for people management of engineering / project management teams, including effective communication and engagement, performance management, employee development, recruitment, retention, absence management etc; * Responsibility for technical excellence and innovation across the project team; * Collaboration with local management team to optimise the resource and demand balance; * Champion Value Management / Engineering to ensure schemes are delivered efficiently; * Deliver improvements to SHEQ within all aspects of projects and lead task groups where appropriate to develop, communicate and implement SHEQ improvements; * Accountable for checking, certifying and authorising for issue designs, documents, approvals, Professional Skill and Care Certificates and reports; * Technical input to the agreement of project briefs, proposals and deliverables with Project Managers. * Develop the talent within Highways Design & Management by coaching and mentoring less experienced staff and supporting their technical career development aspirations * Take responsibility for own personal development with the support of line manager and following an agreed development plan.

We are looking to appoint individuals who will be positive and enthusiastic team players, with degree / higher level qualifications in Civil or Structural Engineering and with previous experience of working in engineering within the construction industry. This position requires candidates to be Chartered Engineer members of a relevant professional engineering body or have equivalent demonstrable experience. Experience Demonstrable knowledge and experience of the design and construction of highways and general civil engineering projects and able to check and verify the technical outputs of the team prior to issue to clients; The ability to lead a team to deliver technical outputs on time, to budget and to the required level of quality; An understanding of Highways England and strategic infrastructure developments, including rail; Experience in the delivery of Highways England projects from a design perspective and familiarity with Highways England processes would be a distinct advantage; An understanding of Local Authority and Private Developer infrastructure developments; A working knowledge of civil engineering and utility provision procedures; An excellent communicator and confident to attend meetings and advise clients and technical team members as appropriate; Up to date knowledge and experience of relevant standards - Eurocodes, DMRB, CDM, AASHTO
