Mechanical Engineers work in a variety of areas at Bechtel related to the design of mechanical equipment and components for industrial facilities, power plants, and commercial facilities. There is a world of career opportunities for Mechanical Engineering degrees at Bechtel.

The total number of hires and start dates are subject to workload and business conditions. Locations will vary based on project needs, and may include Houston, TX and Reston, VA, along with various project sites.

General Job Duties

Mechanical Engineers are typically responsible for:
  • Preparing and reviewing calculations, drawings, specifications, plans and requisitions of structures, systems and equipment;
  • reviewing design documents from equipment suppliers;
  • designing calculations and equipment sizing;
  • system pressure and flow calculations;
  • material takeoffs and estimating support;
  • design specifications;
  • material requisitions;
  • supplier interface;
  • construction support;
  • piping and instrumentation diagrams; and
  • conducting computer aided design (CAD) & computer aided engineering (CAE).

  • Advance Simulation: Using simulation tools and methods to help develop design concepts and detailed engineering plans
  • Field/Construction: Facilitating build process on-site by modifying engineering documents to support a successful construction operation
  • Plant Design & Piping: Reviewing & designing the placement of plant equipment, systems and piping to ensure optimal space utilization
  • Project Estimating, Scheduling & Cost Control: Estimating costs of projects and developing project schedules by providing an objective view of project performance
  • Quality Assurance: Reviewing our work to ensure it meets or exceeds Bechtel's quality standards and our customers' quality expectations
  • Startup & Facility Operations: Testing, calibrating and verifying mechanical and electrical equipment and systems on a project site to have it ready for "turn on," with an operating manual

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering from an accredited college or university within twelve (12) months of graduation date
  • Basic knowledge of engineering design, systems, calculations, along with application of engineering methods and construction methods & materials
  • Possess the eligibility to work and remain in the U.S. without sponsorship
  • Ability and willingness to relocate and/or travel to domestic and/or international project jobsites

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master of Science degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering from an accredited college or University within twelve (12) months of graduation date
  • Completed relevant coursework with a strong GPA
  • Prior co-op or internship experience
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
