As a Big Data Scientist you would need to have experience in statistical, mathematical, predictive modelling as well as having the business strategy skills to build algorithms necessary to not only ask the right questions but find the right answers. You also be required to communicate these findings to non-technical clientele and have a full understanding of how the products are developed.
As a Big Data Scientist you need to have a curious mind, and enjoy throwing yourself fully into a project to find answers to yet unidentified questions. You need to see the bigger picture and be able to ask the right business questions. A Big Data Scientist will need to have the patience of a saint as finding the unknown in huge data sets will take up a lot of time, also developing the right algorithm to unearth new insights will often be trial-and-error.
A talented Big Data Scientist will understand how to integrate numerous systems and data sets, and will need to be able to link up distinctive data sets to discover new innovative insights. Last, but by no means least a Big Data Scientist needs to be a talented programmer, preferably within a range of different languages e.g. Python, R, Java, Matlab, or SQL. You will also be required to have a good understanding of Hadoop, Hive and MapReduce.

An exceptional Big Data Scientist can have a varied background such as econometrics, physics, biostatistics, computer science, applied mathematics or engineering. Most often than not will be MSc or PhD educated, however in order to be the ultimate Big Data Scientist you should have a very good idea of how and why data and predictive analytics are so important to the growth of business.
