Responsibilities for this Position:

NOTE: This position can be located in either McLeansville, North Carolina or Quincy, Massachusetts

General Dynamics Mission Systems (GDMS), a market leader and technology innovator, has an immediate opening for a Advanced SONAR Systems Engineer to join our Autonomous Undersea Systems team. The position provides an opportunity to develop the cutting-edge technology that supports some of our nation's fundamental defense services. The selected candidate will work with collaborative teams to create and manage various General Dynamics Mission Systems and client technologies. This role can include up to 40% travel to support tasking in both McLeansville, NC and Quincy, MA.

Key Responsibilities

The Advanced SONAR Systems Engineer will have a strong electrical engineering background and will architect, design, develop, integrate and test SONAR systems into unmanned maritime vehicles. This engineer will also be capable of SONAR system performance evaluation and analysis. This individual will be responsible for the integration of software, hardware, reliability, maintainability, safety and other requirements in the total systems engineering effort. The successful candidate will have significant experience in:
  • Deriving top level SONAR requirements from mission and system requirements
  • Deriving and allocating sonar subsystem and component requirements from top level Sonar and system performance requirements
  • Designing system and sub-system architectures that support subsystem and system level implementation
  • Modeling and evaluating sonar system performance
  • Analyzing acoustic data
  • Developing and conducting tests for verification of requirements
  • Leading Integrated Product Teams
  • Managing subcontractors and vendors/suppliers through design reviews, testing and on-site support
  • Managing and characterizing technical and program risk
  • Presenting technical and program level information to the customer

Basic Qualifications:

Candidates must demonstrate passion for innovation, a sophisticated understanding of various engineering systems and the ability to further advance General Dynamics Mission Systems technology.

This position requires a Bachelor's degree in Physics, Electrical, Computer, or Systems Engineering or a related technical discipline or the equivalent and at least eight years of directly related work experience. Applicants with a Master's degree and a minimum of six years of related experience are also eligible.
  • Must have at least five years of experience with designing, building, integrating and testing SONAR and their subsystems, preferably with autonomous systems
  • Strong background in analog and digital electrical hardware design and development
  • Demonstrated proficiency with embedded programming and applications such as FPGA, microcontroller design and programming
  • Experience integrating sonar systems with power and battery systems
  • Experience and knowledge of digital signal processing in general and SONAR applications in particular
  • Experience with sonar system performance modeling and simulation
  • Experience analyzing acoustic data using tools such as MATLAB
  • Experience developing and conducting tests for verification of requirements
  • Demonstrated technical leadership and management experience such as leading diverse Integrated Product Teams, managing and characterizing technical and program risk and presenting technical and program level information to the customer
  • Familiarity with mechanical designs and concepts of maritime vehicles and platforms for integrating sonar systems

Department of Defense Secret security clearance is desired at time of hire. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.
