About the Business Line
Our team of environment specialists offers clients expertise in air quality, impact analysis and permitting, environmental health and safety management consulting/due diligence, remediation consulting/engineering and construction/site restoration, specialty and emerging technologies, waste services and water and natural resources.
AECOM is currently recruiting for an Associate level Geotechnical Engineer to lead a geotechnical team in our York office.
We require a geotechnical engineer with a solid career history in geotechnical engineering and who is highly experienced in leading teams undertaking geotechnical investigations, studies and design for rail infrastructure maintenance and upgrade projects.

Nationally our Ground Engineering team comprises some 175 staff and provides one-stop access to services ranging from project management, feasibility studies, detailed design, contract administration and construction supervision for geotechnical works.
We work for leading UK clients including Highways England, Network Rail, Homes and Communities Agency, Local Authorities, as well as for leading contractors and developers and for overseas clients.
AECOM has an impressive portfolio of projects, working on a range of major infrastructure projects in the North of England including the Trafford Park Metrolink tram extension, Northern Hub rail upgrade, Mersey Gateway and the Manchester Airport Relief Road, as well as wider national projects including Crossrail, Thames Tideway, HS2, Hinkley C and Sellafield nuclear power stations.
The role will involve developing and leading a geotechnical team in the AECOM York office, to form a key centre for railway ground engineering work winning and delivery.
You will deliver ground engineering services to both internal and external clients to a high level of technical quality and to programme and budget and must have strong behavioural competencies with respect to client care, staff management, technical leadership, collaborative working, responsibility and independent decision making.
You will report to a Regional Director and will work closely with Ground Engineering staff in local offices, notably Leeds. The role will include local and regional business development and work winning; preferred candidates will have extensive rail industry knowledge and experience and a strong established network of client contacts within the region.
The role will involve management of studies, site inspections, ground investigation planning and direction, interpretation, design and reporting of geotechnical works including soil and rock slope stabilisation, foundations, retaining structures, earthworks and ground improvement. You will be numerate and ideally have experience of routine design software for data manipulation, assessment of soil and rock slope stability and for design of foundations and retaining structures.
Extensive previous experience in engineering geology and geotechnics.
Experienced in leading a technical team and in managing projects in a consultancy environment.
Strong ability in developing business with new and existing clients and in preparing fee proposals.
Possess strong problem solving and inter-personal skills. Works closely and collaboratively with colleagues and clients.
Strong technical skills and experience of geotechnical investigations, studies and design and construction in the UK rail environment. Preferably holds/has held position of CRE Geotechnical.
Strong written and verbal communication skills; the ability to write concise technical reports is essential.
Good knowledge of relevant Eurocodes (EC& design principles in particular) and UK standards and specifications, in particular those of Network Rail.
Licensed to drive a vehicle in the UK.
Willing to travel to other offices and sites within the UK if required by work demand.
A degree in Civil Engineering or Applied Geology and ideally a relevant post graduate qualification in Engineering Geology or Geotechnical Engineering. Holds Chartered Engineer / Geologist status.
