Senior Controls Engineer working within the Performance Systems team with the primary objective to define the engine control system requirements and control system characteristics to ensure our products provide superior performance, durability, quality, serviceability and emissions compliance. |
In this role you will work closely with a cross functional group of engineers spanning engine validation, mechanical systems, component / design, electronics & controls and engine performance & calibration groups to break down a high level project goals into detailed planned tasks and then execute the detailed control system actions.
Generation of new control system concepts or control system requirements for new platforms, new technology projects, and continuous improvement of existing systems.
Controls development in Simulink for auto-code.
Providing predictions on product performance and variability to direct component specification and system integration, which may include elements of engine, aftertreatment and electronics.
Mathematical modelling of complicated physical problems for PC or real time HiL. This may include fluid, thermodynamic, mechanical, hydraulic and electromechanical systems from first principles. This may include the training of models, like Neural Networks, and parameter estimation of dynamic systems.
Defining and documenting system capabilities and communicating these to customers.
Contributing to engine and system multi-generational plans and keep up to date with new technology, or aid with the development of new technology to meet system level requirements.
Minimum of 2:1 Bachelors or Master's degree in mathematics, physics, mechanical, electrical and electronic, or Control and Systems Engineering.
Self-starter with the ability work with high level instruction, minimal detail breakdown and to be able to seek out relevant information, data and support from other engineering groups.
Ideally experience of Mathworks Matlab and Simulink, inc RT Workshop, State flow toolboxes.
Experience of complex Electronics and Controls system concept generation including drafting block diagram controls for simulation assessment.
Good base knowledge mathematics, data analysis, numerical modelling and statistics.
Extensive understanding of control algorithms and logic.
Excellent analytical skills with ability to summarise and make clear technical recommendations with supporting data.
Ability to perform complex assignments involving multifunctional disciplines.
Ability to communicate technical information effectively, both written and verbal, with team members and others in the work group, as well employees in other units, customers, and suppliers.
Good base knowledge of internal combustion engines.
Experience of a virtual verification and validation processes and techniques.
Experience of detailed control system functional requirement documentation and requirements cascade.
Experience of compilation and auto-code of block diagram control systems to ECM hardware.
Experience with software version control.
Experience of either diesel engine or off-highway machine development (performance or mechanical).
Appreciation of engine simulation techniques to aid with requirements/capability definition.
Working appreciation of key machine systems for performance optimisation or machine-engine control system integration.
Ideal Key Competencies
Demonstrate knowledge of actuator control logic and algorithms.
Have the ability to generate new conceptual control requirements for engine and aftertreatment actuator and injector control.
Demonstrate detailed knowledge of diesel engine and aftertreatment performance.
Have a high level of competency in the use of data-analysis tools (e.g. Excel, Minitab, Matlab etc);
Have the ability to use 'design of experiments' software (e.g. Design Expert, AVL Cameo) to create mathematical response models;
Demonstrate an understanding of measurement tolerances and instrumentation requirements;
Demonstrate the ability to interpret data, identify quality issues and understand performance interactions;
Be familiar with 1-D simulation tools (e.g. GT-Power, Wave, AmeSIM);
Have the potential to develop or improve analysis tools.
Demonstrate good written and presentation skills;
Have the ability to listen and adapt to the audience requirements and lead technical presentations with authority;
Have the ability to build relationships and communicate at all levels of the business.
