Hatch Mining & Mineral Processing (MMP) is an expanding business unit specializes in the areas of mine engineering, data management, mine technical computing and mineral processing, tailings storage facilities, mine waste and water management. Hatch has significant experience and expertise in all aspects of tailings management with major projects in Australia, Asia, Africa, South America, the USA and Canada.

Hatch MMP is seeking a suitably qualified Civil/Geotechnical Engineer to work with a dynamic multi-disciplinary team in Hatch's Mississauga office. This is a newly created role and would suit an experienced professional with a strong technical focus, good project skills and experience working with or managing junior geotechnical and hydrotechnical engineers to support Mining projects in North America. Cold climate experience will be looked upon favorably.

Reporting to the Regional Tailings Director, North America, you will be responsible for:

  • Ability to manage tailings scope within pre-feasibility studies through to detailed engineering and operational support;
  • Work with and where necessary manage multi-disciplinary teams to develop integral tailings management solutions for our clients, including dam design, tailings processing and slurry distribution; and
  • Mentor and manage junior engineers and CAD designers.


  • Degree qualified Civil or Geotechnical engineer with at least 10 years previous experience in a tailings consulting or an operations role;
  • Post graduate qualifications in geotechnical-engineering or soil mechanics will be looked upon favorably;
  • Good written and verbal English language skills; and
  • Strong technical skills in civil/geotechnical engineering or tailings process design.

This is an opportunity to be involved in a dynamic tailings business and to provide support to our other regional tailings groups. The position will suit a motivated and energetic individual who is seeking to develop their technical and project management skills. The position will involve short term travel within North America. The primary focus will be project support for our Metals business in Canada and travel within this area may be frequent. Occasionally you may also be required to support our global operations in Australia, South Africa and South America.
