Structural Technician / Engineer
Job Description
1. A good understanding of how structures work.
2. A working knowledge of construction practices.
3. An understanding of the Health & Safety at Work Act and its relationship to a safe design.
4. Knowledge of design software - Tedds, Master Series and use of Autocad.
5. Design:
i) An ability to assess and interpret a site investigation in order to provide a
comprehensive and cost effective design, including concrete strength and protection.
ii) Carry out load rundowns of a structure in order to provide a suitable foundation
design (trench fill/strip).
iii) Assess site investigations and proposed levels.
iv) Knowledge of NHBC Standard 4.2, Building Near Trees, in order to apply where
v) Piled foundations: from pile layout calculate loads on piles, prepare pile and ground
beam layout and detail drawings and schedules.
vi) Other alternative types of foundations, reinforced concrete rafts, pier and beam.
6. Superstructure
i) Steelwork: an understanding of BS 5950, ability to design steel elements of a
structure in accordance with the British Standard, both manually and using computer
ii) Concrete: an understanding of BS 8110, ability to design concrete elements of a
structure in accordance with the British Standard, both manually and using computer
iii) Masonry: an understanding of BS 5628, ability to design masonry elements and
iv) Timber: an understanding of BS 5268, ability to design timber elements and detail.
v) Analysis of structures (from Architects working drawings): Application of NHBC
Standards and Building Regulations in order to achieve a design suitable for
NHBC/Local Authority submission.
vi) An understanding of BS 5977: Lintels, BS 6399 Wind Code and other British
vii) Design checks on building elements (designs by client subcontractors) roof trusses,
intermediate pre-cast concrete and timber floors, pre-cast ground floors and lintels.
7. Preparation of reports to standard format.
8. Dealing with client queries, attending project meetings as required.
