NES Global Talent are currently supporting the development of a new Energy from Waste power plant in the South East of England and are looking to engage a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to assist in the evolving design, based on site. We are looking for candidates with extensive experience in leading design teams in a live construction environment. The successful candidate will most likely come from a strong background in Energy from waste / combustion power generation plant, or potentially a background in CCGT or conventional power generation. Specification as follows:


A senior mechanical design engineer engaged by our client will be responsible for different aspects of the mechanical design process depending on the type of contract awarded to the company and the size of the project. The list below represents the most common duties that a senior mechanical engineer will be asked to take responsibility for:

To contribute to co-operative working across disciplines in accordance with the company`s procedures, and contribute to multi-disciplinary project teams.

To contribute to ensuring that effective internal/external working relationships are established and maintained with clients, sub-contractors and specialist suppliers.

To contribute to ensuring that confidentiality is observed and maintained when dealing with private/confidential correspondence, reports, statements, records, other documents and information.

Comply with all approved company procedures including compliance with current health & safety legislation.

Contribute to the preparation of health and safety method statements and risk assessments as required by the project to meet current legislation.

Carry out site surveys to identify the client`s needs and requirements making recommendations as necessary.

Produce and develop designs for mechanical services at various stages of a project from concept to handover. Ensure that designs meet user requirements, cost limits and time scales.

Lead and manage internal and external mechanical designers in the production of bids, tenders and full detailed design from concept to handover. Ensure that designs meet user requirements, cost limits and time scales.

Monitoring, reviewing and reporting on the quality of mechanical designs produced by the internal or external mechanical design team.

Prepare estimates for the implementation of mechanical services.

Produce tender enquiry documents in respect of contracts for the provision of mechanical services.

Assist the commercial managers in evaluating tender returns as may be required.

Monitor and comment on sub-contractors work as may be required on individual projects.

Liaise with the construction supervisor during the design/installation/commissioning phases of the project and assist in construction supervision when required.

Contribute to the engineering team by attending as and when required regular team meetings and courses to ensure that changes in legislation and company policies are fully complied with.

Provide a professional and high quality service in accordance with the company`s quality assurance procedures and assist in the review of standards and procedures to ensure a continuing improvement in the service provided to the company`s clients.

Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications


Engineering or Science degree qualified preferred, or HND/HNC plus a minimum of 10 years of relevant engineering experience.

At least 5 years demonstrable experience covering a range of engineering and/or technical topics including design, analysis, specification, installation, commissioning and supervision of staff/contractors.

At least 5 years of experience with the design of Power Generation plant i.e. Energy from waste, CCGT, Coal fired, Gas Turbines etc

Ability to work to deadlines, under pressure and on own initiative.

Computer literate.

Possess good written and oral communication skills, and the ability to communicate well at all levels and able to control certain financial aspects of contracts and/or projects.

Experience in the planning, organising and control of sub-contractors, be able to provide services to agreed standards,

The post holder should possess a current driving licence.

Highly Desirable (but not essential)

Evidence of continuing professional development and an ongoing commitment to undertake training and studies to meet the demands of both current and future legislation relating to the design of building services.

Hold or aspire to hold Chartered Status and be a Member of one or more relevant professional institutions.

High technology or industrial sector industry experience preferred (this includes energy/pharmaceutical/microelectronics/science and research/nuclear)

Experience of Quality systems to BS EN ISO 9001.

Core Competencies

Ensuring that procedures, codes and standards are correctly identified and applied to engineering and technical activities.

Producing, reviewing, verifying and approving calculations, analyses, drawings, models, design basi s documentation and technical reports.

Producing, reviewing, verifying and approving technical Scopes of Work, assessing tender returns, then checking/assessing and/or approving the outputs to ensure that the requirements of the design sub -contract are met.

Producing, reviewing, verifying and approving technical specifications, assessing tender returns and providing technical support to those packages throughout the design, construction, installation, commissioning, operation and decommissioning phases of the project to ensure that the Design Intent is maintained.

Ensuring that design consultants and sub-contractors deploy suitably qualified and experienced personnel.

Ensuring that conventional HS&E protection requirements are embodied in the designs.

Assessing and approving design changes.

Assessing and approving concessions and technical queries.

Establishing, leading and maintaining the engineering configuration, ensuring that the overall Design Intent and integrity is maintained throughout design development and subsequent changes.

Feeding back lessons learnt for use on other projects.

Preparing quality plans for single discipline work packages.

Presenting designs for hazard identification and HAZOP studies.

Leading and preparing discipline answers and estimates for bids.

Supervising engineers/technical specialists within same discipline teams.

Ensuring that adequate Reviewing, Verifying & Approval is undertaken on all their deliverables and for those under their direct control and supervision.

Leading and providing peer assistance of bids, tasks, designs or projects.

Representing the discipline to customers, regulatory and external bodies.

Independent assessment of the technical basis of claims and disputes.

Reviewing industry best practice for implementation.
