The Role

The Solution Architect is the technical lead for major Change projects and programmes. Solution Architects reside within the Strategy and Architecture team and typically work on 2-3 projects concurrently. The Solution Architect will be required to create and articulate solution architectures that meet functional and non-functional requirements, encompassing the business, application, data and infrastructure elements of the solution. Furthermore, the Solution Architect is expected to retain the technical lead role for a Change activity until it is implemented and successfully transitioned to Production. The Solution Architect role does not have direct line manager responsibilities although can be expected to coordinate other technical staff as and when required.

Key Accountabilities

The Solution Architect is accountable for defining solutions architectures for complex Change projects. Typical responsibilities include:

Defining and articulating complex solutions for large scale projects, including business, application, data and infrastructure impacts along with testing and implementation considerations;
Developing pragmatic, commercially feasible architectures, considering all functional as well as non-functional requirements (e.g. performance, capacity, accessibility, security, usability);
Leading a multi-disciplinary team of application, data and infrastructure professionals to implement the architecture, including those distributed across geographical boundaries;
Troubleshoot complex and intermittent problems to tight timeframes while under pressure;
Providing strategic consultation to IT projects and service development initiatives in defining or designing business processes and functions, as well as in researching, identifying and internally marketing enabling technologies based on customer requirements.

The Solution Architect is a senior resource and is recognised as an "ambassador" for the organisation. As a result, The Solution Architect is expected to demonstrate strong technical credibility as well as excellent communication skills. Responsibilities therefore include:

Setting and maintaining the highest professional standards for themselves and team members to assist other architects in embedding company values in the behaviour of the team;
Resolve escalated technical issues, using influence, negotiation, and a deep understanding of the technology and people involved;
Recognised as an ambassador for the company, a role model and a key player in raising morale in the team;
Demonstrating and encouraging commitment to team objectives;
Proactively supports team training initiatives, making recommendations and providing coaching and / or support to less experienced team members;
Acting as a coach / mentor; listen and offer support, advice, assistance and encouragement;
Managing time effectively, working within established guidelines applying standard technical checks without supervision;
Dealing with and resolving problems using a high degree of independent judgement;
Delivering results in an unstructured and high-pressure environment, introduce structured and best-practice approaches, and consistently deliver high quality results;
Assisting with addressing RFP's and new sales proposals;
Assisting in assessing new technologies and representing solution design to the Technical Design Authority;

The Solution Architect's principal "customers" are Change projects and the respective system owners. Therefore the Solution Architect has a duty to build and maintain effective relationships with these communities in a positive way, looking and finding solutions to problems that emerge. Responsibilities include:

Providing technical guidance and leadership to and, if necessary, challenging both a technical and non-technical audience whilst maintaining positive relationships;
Identification of candidate solutions to concerns arising;
Communicating complex technical concepts and issues clearly and succinctly to stakeholders at all levels of the organisation, from junior technical staff to senior management;
Maintaining regular stakeholder contact through face-to-face and written communication;
Defending and articulating the architecture viewpoint clearly either orally or in writing in an appropriate style to safeguard reputations and customer relations;
Dealing with customer queries professionally and expeditiously creating an environment where peers recognise positive service and respect for customers;
Recognise opportunities for improvement and champion Change initiatives and motivate team members to embrace change.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications

Proven ability to develop, and see through to implementation and operation, commercially feasible Solution Architectures for complex projects, ideally using a best practice framework using enterprise tools;
Ability to define and identify solutions from both a technical and commercial perspective that meet the needs of the client without constraining likely future developments;
Proven ability to successfully take a logical and structured approach to leading a multi-disciplinary team of application and infrastructure professionals;
Highly developed communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical concepts and issues clearly and succinctly to stakeholders at all levels of the organisation;
Ability to understand Business, functional requirements and non-functional requirements and transform them into a Solution Architecture.

The ideal candidate will also be able to demonstrate a degree of understanding of the following technology areas:

System integration - SOA, REST and ESB (Fuse)
Database technologies (DB2, Oracle, MongoDB and SQL Server)
Business Processing Tools/Workflow (Pega)
Mainframe systems and integration (Z/OS, Cobal, PL/1 and CICS)
Application Development (Enterprise Java)
Infrastructure (Virtualisation, SAN and High Availability)
Security and Authentication solutions
Management Information (QuikView)
