Responsibilities for this Position:

GDMS has an immediate opening for a Senior Technical Writer to join our team in our Colorado Springs, CO location. The position provides an opportunity to support the development of cutting-edge technology that supports some of our nation's fundamental defense services. GDMS employees work closely with esteemed clients to develop solutions that allow them to carry out high-stakes national security missions. The selected candidate will work with collaborative teams to ensure GDMS and client technologies are functioning as efficiently as possible. Key Responsibilities for the Senior Technical Writer:
  • Create, develops, plan, writes and edits complex operational, instructional, maintenance or test manuals for various publications and/or proposals in order to meet program requirements for technical documentation.
  • Work in a team environment and negotiate solutions among functional groups (Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering and others) is a key success factor.
  • Gather text and materials (such as engineering models, drawings, schematics, spreadsheets, etc.) by researching products and data, conducting interviews with various users, technical staff and subject matter experts in order to analyze, interpret and convert the information into end-user military standard (MIL STD) documentation and reference materials such as maintenance allocation charts (MACs) and repair parts and special tools lists
  • Determine and defines best practices and procedures for organizing and formatting data, transposing content into professional materials and makes decisions on specific guidelines on technical product instruction development
  • Provide recommendations and ideas to the technical documentation lead and team on best work practices, work-flow, presentation, structure and organization of materials by developing new work processes and methods using existing authoring tools, new authoring tools and third party plug-ins in order to improve work process efficiency and overall quality of customer deliverables
  • Document engineering processes and specifications by editing software developer and engineering staff notes and procedures and applies formatting to support the writing and publication of hardware and software test procedures, white papers, read-me files
  • Pro-actively informs the technical documentation lead of assignment status, issues or concerns, including issues of scope, schedule, process, and quality through informal meetings, and emailed status reports to keep the technical documentation lead informed
  • Ensure the accurate preparation of documents for interim and final delivery to customer by participating in peer review of documentation

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Technical Writing, English or a related field or the equivalent experience is required. In addition, a minimum of 5 years of directly related experience is required, 7 years preferred.
  • Military or technical experience desirable; Military publications experience desirable.
  • Proficient in the use of Adobe® Technical Communication Suite 4, Adobe Frame Maker (v11 preferred)
  • Knowledgeable of: TO 00-5-1, TO 00-5-3, MIL-STD-38784A, DI-MISC-81457, 81458, and 81456, and applicable USAF directives/specifications
  • Ability to produce clear and concise documentation using Adobe FrameMaker®, MS Word®, and Excel® software
  • Knowledge of computer security policies and practices
  • Ability to work harmoniously in a team environment with government customers and other contractors
  • Must be able to obtain a DoD Common Access Card (CAC)
  • Travel may be required

Department of Defense TS/SCI security clearance is preferred at time of hire. Candidates must be able to obtain a TS/SCI clearance within a reasonable amount of time from date of hire. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.
