We are looking for a software engineer to join our talented development team working on our flagship GRANTA MI product. This is an exciting opportunity to further develop and enhance our core platform and apply excellence in software engineering. About Granta Our mission is to lead materials information technology-to advance materials engineering and education, and to enable better, greener, safer products. Materials information technology is where materials science and materials engineering meet software and information technology. Our software manages data relating to materials and applies that data for education and to support decisions in industry. Granta has been the leader in this niche field for twenty years, beginning as a spin-out from Cambridge University Engineering Department. We help materials engineering teams in industries such as aerospace, automotive, medical devices, and consumer products to be more efficient and effective as they build their organizations' material intelligence. We support university educators as they develop material intelligence in the next generation of engineers, scientists, and industrial designers. And we help engineers and development teams to apply this material intelligence to lower cost and risk, and improve the performance of products. The Role What you will be doing: - Working in a small team of talented software engineers and a QA engineer, contributing your own ideas, skills, and experience - Designing and developing software to further enhance, maintain and test the MI platform including the following areas: - Server and database systems - C# and WCF APIs - User facing applications (on the web and desktop) - Having the opportunity to work with latest web technologies (NA MVC & Web API, AngularJS) - Providing support and advice to team members and offering constructive feedback (including via code review) - Identifying and helping to implement process improvement - Utilising continuous integration via our dedicated TeamCity suite - Using the latest development tools - Applying SOLID principles & design patterns to create well-architected REQUIREMENTS The ideal candidate will: - Be self-motivated and technically accomplished with a track record of effective team work - Have the analytical skills to effectively resolve technical problems with simple solutions and be able to build consensus around those solutions - Have significant development experience with the .net framework and C# and good knowledge of .net libraries and frameworks including idiomatic usage - Be practised at refactoring, including techniques to develop and extend legacy code - Be able to make effective use of debugging, diagnostic and profiling tools to build efficient software - Be familiar with distributed version control system tasks including merging, effectively resolving conflicts, cherry picking etc - Have customer focus and a good awareness of software usability issues - Have effective written and verbal communication, presentation skills and an attention to detail - Be passionate about learning and sharing new development skills - Be effective at time management, estimation and prioritization - Have a first class or upper second class honours degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Science or Mathematics from a recognised university (or overseas equivalent) The following would also be an advantage: - To have experience of working in an agile team environment and have a good understanding of agile methodologies in general - To have knowledge of at least two secondary languages (e.g. css, html, t-sql, JavaScript etc.) and platforms - To have a good understanding of database fundamentals and their implementation - To have an understanding of test automation techniques Knowledge and experience in the materials domain is very welcome but not a requirement for this position.
