Structural Engineer
Location: London Central

Are you a Structural Engineer seeking your next Technical Challenge? If you like solving technical problems relating to buildings and other structures then we have the job for you!

This is a great career opportunity for a Structural Engineer to be trained by Experts in Forensic Engineering. This career opportunity is rewarding, extremely challenging and a unique proposition for those who thrive on technically focused work.

The Company

My client is both a very well established family business and the UK's most successful independent materials and engineering consultancy providing a wide range of forensic investigation services both internationally and nationwide. With over a 100 years under their belt and over 100 engineers based on site, they are now seeking a Structural Engineer to undertake various testing, inspection and investigations for all aspects of civil and mechanical engineering.

The Role

You will have the opportunity to investigate a wide range of structural engineering related incidents and accidents. We need people of a particular mind-set who enjoy applying their practical and theoretical thinking to determine why a problem exists and how to solve it. The role is very hands on, and will require someone who has a technical and practice approach to dismantle equipment or components in a systematic manner to obtain the evidence you require to determine the cause of the failure. You will then examine and analyse this and other physical evidence in the Client's own on-site laboratories.

As a Chartered Engineer you will have full membership of an appropriate recognised professional institution, (MICE, MIStructE). You should possess substantial industry experience, as well as an in-depth understanding of superstructure, foundation and geotechnical design.

With the option of working from home, you can also look forward to real flexibility, plus an excellent work/life balance. You will enjoy a high level of responsibility as well as autonomy but with the full support of a dedicated management network.

Key Responsibilities (including, but not limited to;)

Conducting site-based investigations to record and gather the available physical evidence
Reviewing technical documentation that may comprise structural / engineering drawings
Providing the client with timely preliminary verbal and/or written advice in a form that can be readily understood by a layperson and ultimately a Judge
Conducting detailed visual and low magnification examinations of failed components / structures
Devising and conducting testing of components
Preparing reports that may be in the form of a brief letter style report or in the form of a detailed, illustrated report for Court proceedings.
Providing expert witness evidence in Court, which will involve being questioned in depth by a Barrister, who will be briefed by a technical expert.
Consulting relevant standards, regulations and other published guidance

Ideally you will;

Have attained a good honours degree in Structural / Civil Engineering
Be a member of an appropriate recognised professional institution (MICE, MIStructE)
A higher degree by study or research (eg MSc or PhD) is desirable
Be a Chartered Engineer
Have experience of undertaking engineering type investigations and be familiar with health and safety regulations and guidance relating to the workplace
Have a practical engineering ability in addition to a strong academic record
Be prepared to provide expert witness evidence in Court when required
