2nd line / 3rd Line Support Engineer - would ideally suit someone with strong 2nd line and looking to progress to 3rd line

Salary circa £30,000 plus excellent benefits package

Our client one of the UKs leading independently owned building services companies who have just celebrated their 70th Anniversary requires an expereince 3rd Line Support Engineer to join their expanding team.


The 3rd Line Support Engineer's role is to ensure the stable operation of the Group's computer systems, network and infrastructure. This includes planning, developing, installing, configuring, maintaining, supporting, and optimizing all hardware, software, and communication links. The person will also provide an escalation point for 1st/2nd line issues, analysing and resolving hardware and software computer problems in a timely and accurate fashion, and providing training and advice where required.


Strategy & Planning

•Assist the Senior Systems Administrator in system design and capacity planning.

•Assist in the development, implementation and maintenance of policies, procedures and associated training plans for resource administration, appropriate use, and disaster recovery.

•Maintain service level agreements within the Group.

Acquisition & Deployment

•Provide escalation support for installation, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of end user workstation hardware, software, and peripheral devices.

•Interact and negotiate with vendors, outsourcers, and contractors to secure products and services.

•Conduct research on products, services, protocols, and standards in support of procurement and development efforts.

Operational Management

•Manage the server environment, including e-mail, print, monitoring, deployment and backup servers and their associated operating systems and software

•Manage security solutions, including firewall, anti-virus, and intrusion detection systems

•Manage network hardware and equipment, including routers, switches, hubs, and UPSs

•Ensure network connectivity of all endpoints

•Administer all equipment, hardware and software upgrades

•Practice asset management, including maintenance of component inventory and related documentation and technical specifications information

•Administer and maintain end user accounts, permissions, and access rights

•Perform server and security audits

•Perform system backups and recovery

•Monitor and test system performance and provide statistics and reports

•Recommend, schedule, and perform system improvements, upgrades, and repairs

•Manage and/or provide guidance to junior members of the team

Position Requirements

Formal Education & Certification

•College diploma or university degree in the field of computer science and/or 4 years equivalent work experience

Knowledge & Experience

•Extensive technical knowledge of network and PC operating systems

•Extensive technical knowledge of current network hardware, protocols, and standards

•Extensive application support experience

•Hands-on hardware troubleshooting experience

•Extensive knowledge of a range of diagnostic utilities

•Familiarity with the fundamental principles of ITIL

•Exceptional written and oral communication skills

•Exceptional interpersonal skills, with a focus on rapport-building, listening and questioning skills

•Strong documentation skills

•Good understanding of the organization's goals and objectives

•Knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws

•Fluent English
