Position Overview
We are looking for a highly experienced, professional and committed Chief Instructor for the Royal Navy Sailing Centre (RNSC) at Whale Island in Portsmouth. The successful candidate will possess demonstrable training expertise, be well-qualified and hold the appropriate Governing Body qualifications matched with a comprehensive knowledge and record of responsible water safety. Proven ability to organise, lead and manage a small professional team, the Chief Instructor will drive the dedicated delivery of Dinghy Sailing, Kayaking, Stand-up Paddleboarding and Powerboat courses to Armed Forces personnel and a host of Cadet and other civilian users of the Centre. Seasonal evening and weekend working is required; the RNSC hosts between 70 and 90 events and activities every year, from regattas to taster sessions.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Responsible to the Manager RNSC for the supervision of the safe operation of the RNSC waterborne products and the proper conduct of all users, verifying the legitimacy of qualifications, identifying risks and control measures while utilising Interserve, Sports' National Governing Bodies and, where applicable, MOD Health and Safety management systems.
  • Conduct the contracted, accredited training and recreational outputs of the RNSC.
  • Ensure recognised training and instructional standards are met through regular continuous professional development, with particular attention to quality and procedural accuracy for the award of governing body qualifications.
  • Assist in organising and resourcing the preparation, launch, recovery, repair and first line maintenance of contracted RNSC craft and coordinate second line repair requirements.
  • Oversee Cadet Programmes and activities in support of visiting supervisory staff to ensure the correct safety and training protocols and conduct are being applied.
  • Maintain an appropriate operational liaison for the proper conduct of water-borne activities whilst afloat with Harbour Control.
  • Deputise for the RNSC Manager when required.
  • Ensure personal fitness and professional qualifications are maintained.
  • Exercise Line Management and effective supervision to Interserve personnel, as delegated.
  • Report on relevant environmental protection issues.
  • Carry out any other tasks as determined by the Interserve Line Manager to meet the needs of the business, including support/cover for other staff.

The successful applicant will be a very confident, "safety first and last" self-starter with strong communications skills, ready and willing to contribute to the success of the RNSC at any level. Highly professional and innovative with abundant versatility across the specified disciplines, good judgement and absolute integrity. Persuasive but patient and encouraging when required and responsive to changing needs of the business, the RYA and demands of the customer. The ability to remain calm under pressure and motivated, while being utterly reliable is essential, while being well-presented, giving a positive image of Interserve company values, and:
  • RYA Powerboat Instructor
  • RYA Senior Sailing Instructor
  • RYA Safety Boat Certificate
  • GMDSS (VHF) Short Range Certificate
  • RYA Small Craft First Aid Certificate
  • RYA Race Officer (desirable)
  • BC UKCC Level 2 Paddlesports Coach (essential) with Moderate Water Sea Endorsement (desirable)
  • BC 4* Sea Kayak leader (desirable)
  • BSUPA Level 2 Coach
  • Strong grasp of Health and Safety requirements with IOSH qualification
  • IT literate with a working knowledge of MS applications

Additional Information
• Achievement of MOD security clearance will be required (Proof of Right to Work in the UK essential)
• Achievement of DBS
• Core working hours 37.5 hours per week and overtime during evenings and weekends is expected
• Required to wear approved company work wear, including PPE when necessary
