AEM Specialist role description
UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) is the government department that helps UK-based companies succeed in the global economy and assists overseas companies to invest in the UK. It is part of the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills and the Foreign & Commonwealth Office. Trade and investment are major pillars of the Government?s growth strategy and have never had a higher profile in Whitehall.
The Investment Group (IG) exists to bring Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) to the UK. We work with overseas companies in their country of origin and in the UK to provide advice and support to make their investment decision in the UK?s favour, and build long term relationships with the most important companies to the UK. The group is highly successful, exceeding national targets in the last two years and bringing record numbers of investment projects to the UK.
UKTI IG is creating a new team of specialists to work across the North to drive foreign direct investment into the region. UKTI?s goal is to support the wider rebalancing of the UK economy by attracting high-value (capital investment projects typically on the scale of ten million pounds and/or creating 30 new jobs in the UK) investment opportunities from around the world that align with the primary economic capabilities of the North.
This specialist role will lead on the Advanced Manufacturing sectors. The specialist will work closely with UKTI?s local partners? team, the global value chain team and the existing sector team within a target driven environment to bring in additional business to the North.
This specialist will need to have an excellent understanding of the Advanced Manufacturing sectors, including Automotive, Aerospace, Space & satellite manufacture, Marine engineering, Rail, Chemicals, as well as the underpinning engineering supply chain across all regions of the North and effectively sell these strengths to firms seeking to establish or grow a long-term UK business presence. To do this they will need to develop new and old networks, to source new prospects and drive existing prospects along the pipeline through active projects to FDI wins in the North.
Investment into the North is of great interest to Ministers and the specialist will need to be able to hit the ground running, delivering immediately on UKTI objectives for increased FDI in the North in 16/17. To do this they will need to gain the trust of investment organisations, LEPs and industry clusters across the North rapidly, balancing the many complex priorities and opportunities across the North. They will also need to act as a subject matter expert for their sector in the North ensuring that UKTI?s teams in the UK and globally are able to understand and sell the strengths of the North in the Advanced Manufacturing sectors.
? UKTI needs someone with a minimum of 5 years? experience of working across the engineering, auto, aerospace or technical consulting sectors in the North with a well-developed network of contacts, good commercial judgement and customer facing/commercial experience, and understanding of the local organisations involved in (trade and) investment and their priorities. Given the wide range of manufacturing projects and sectors which could require support, a broad range of engineering experience, and the ability to be flexible to respond to particular market opportunities will be particularly important.
? The specialist will be generating, screening, evaluating and following up opportunities for the pipeline, and interacting with the UKTI team. The ability to quickly understand and articulate the UK and the North?s "offer" to Investors will be essential, as will the ability to work alongside UKTI and local northern networks, adding specialist value to their work, and upskilling their capability to win more High Value businesses themselves.
? The Specialist will need to have a broad network across the North as well as connections to clusters and centres of excellence across the regions which they can leverage to support inward investors. Experience at building relationships at the highest level will be needed as will expertise in balancing the complex asks of numerous stakeholders with an interest in FDI in the north.
? Knowledge of the North?s strengths in the Advanced Manufacturing sectors is essential and an understanding of how these fit within the wider context of the North?s economic narrative will be important. An understanding of specific opportunities that exist within the North is also important and the Specialist will need to demonstrate that they understand the key industry clusters and key market opportunities in engineering in the North, including upcoming opportunities for inward investment such as in rail, or provided by the use of new technologies, materials and processes in more established sectors such as automotive and aerospace.
? The specialist will also be supporting UKTI with development of specific sector propositions for the North and so excellent evidence gathering, analysis and drafting skills will be important, as will an real enthusiasm for mapping and understanding the Advanced Manufacturing sectors in the North.
? A willingness to travel regularly, both around UK and internationally.
Specifically, ROI for the first 12 months will include:
? Engagement with all of priority sector market combinations for the North in UKTI?s international network
? An increase of 30 high value prospect projects to UKTI?s pipeline ? all of which should have the potential to land in the North.
? Conversion of 10 existing projects on FDI pipeline to active projects where the investor will benefit from landing in the North.
? Successful landing of at least 10 high value projects in the North;
? A demonstrable increase in sectoral knowledge and investor outreach in markets with relevant sector market combinations across the world.
? Creation of compelling and well-evidenced sector based propositions for the North.
? Collaborative relationships with relevant northern stakeholders.
