My client is a thriving eCommerce development agency based in Stafford, Staffordshire. They are 22 people strong, and next year will celebrate our 22nd birthday as a business.
They have built and supported hundreds of Magento, WordPress and bespoke applications for brands big and small, mostly in the UK, but also worldwide.
My client is looking for a DevOps enthusiast who can come in and take ownership of our hosting operations, and work alongside our development team in a busy agency environment.
WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING?
At a very high level, you will support the environment that will allow you to build and run PHP and MySQL applications. My client is almost exclusively running Ubuntu Linux, primarily on cloud computing as well as a decreasing amount of dedicated servers in our own racks in Manchester. You will be involved with the migration from physical to the cloud.
You will also be handling a share of the support work from our customer-facing ticket system and performing phone support. This may be a customer reporting that their site is down, or slow, with a question about their server set up, asking for firewall or DNS changes, or raising a development issue which needs to be passed over to the development team.
You will also be responding to any reported incidents raised by our monitoring system, including outages, disk space warnings and reports of failed backups.
WE NEED YOU TO HAVE...
The core of experience that you need is LAMP hosting and knowledge of a configuration management language like Ansible, Puppet or Chef. (We use Ansible).
Good debugging skills are important, you should be familiar with tcpdump for solving network problems and something like strace or gdb for figuring out what a misbehaving service is doing.
IT'S NICE TO HAVE...
As they build Magento stores, being familiar with that platform would be a bonus, but being familiar with PHP based applications would be a good start.
My client often touch applications written in a lot of different languages, familiarity with more languages is a plus. You don't need to be an expert, but any Ruby, C, Go, Java, and PHP you have will help.
Also manage almost everything that they can in GIT, so experience with it or a similar version control system would be helpful.
Some other tools that we use which it would be great if you have experience with are: Grafana/Graphite, Kibana/Logstash, ElasticSearch, CloudStack, Ceph, Redis, Bind, Exim, Tomcat, KVM, Sense, Icinga/Nagios, GitLab, Varnish, Nginx, CloudInit, MongoDB.
