Functions in a mid level engineering capacity, or technical specialist. The MDU design engineer is responsible for Multi-dwelling Unit design production. It requires close coordination with site fielding staff and graphics personnel to support the final product. Typical MDU design responsibilities range from the initial determination of the routing and design concepts based on site walk outs to generation of a final bill of material for procurement. The design engineer is fully responsible and accountable for the final design content and document generation to support the placement of the physical fiber infrastructure supporting Outside and Inside Plant communication facilities. Under general supervision, performs all aspects of conventional design engineering and analysis. Broadens knowledge and skill set in area of discipline. May start to expand knowledge in other disciplines and/or functional areas. |
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
20% - Design review and quality assurance
10% - Local client interface
70% - Design formulation
•Attend Client Kick-Off meetings and follow up design calls.
•Coordinate with the fielding team on specific site visit schedule and requirements.
•Review preliminary client route design and facility specifics to manage fielding request instructions.
•Perform detailed ISP designs specifically accommodating MDU needs.
•Create all necessary splicing prints/port assignments and power loss budgets.
•Assure designs meet client design standards.
•Support the team by participating in the mentoring of other design team members.
•Perform design within allocated budgets and time frames.
•Provide design lead with updates on progress and roadblocks.
•Utilize GIS and other design software support tools.
•Advise the Engineering Lead regarding design progress and roadblocks discovered during the design process.
•Participate in developing process improvement concepts.
•Review fielding and client change request to manage the scope of work changes and design criteria.
•Perform detailed design in GIS based systems.
•Review designs for quality and cost improvements.
•Support design lead with any jurisdiction and landlord review meetings as required.
Understand project milestones. Monitor status of milestones, and provide regular updates.
Maintain project records and files, in Documentum and SharePoint.
•Support QC and as built efforts with design changes.

Preferred Job Qualifications
•Typically a minimum of 5 years related work experience, managers would prefer 7+ years.
•Bachelor's degree in engineering technology or sciences preferred or any other degree, specialized training, or experience, that makes the individual uniquely qualified to perform the job responsibilities.
•Experience in MDU, OSP and ISP fiber detailed design a plus.
• Ideal candidates will have 3+ years direct ISP/MDU telecommunications experience and 1-3 years of ISP construction management experience preferred.
•Experience in interpreting client request and apply design standards to work product.
•Possesses a deep understanding of inside and outside plant fiber optic network infrastructure alternatives available.
•Familiar with construction focused on MDU fiber builds.
•Knowledge/experience with Web Applications and the GIS design domain.
•Strong interpersonal, analytical and communication skills.
•Flexible and able to think quickly working to resolve design issues and makes decisions.
•Experience in managing multiple projects.
