Planning Manager

The division provides new build, design & build, repair, maintenance and upgrade services across the Power Transmission & Distribution industry to a wide variety of major utility organisation clients, both across the UK and Worldwide. Our client is a people business and will continue to develop and recruit high calibre individuals to support its active management team and a highly skilled workforce. The Power Solutions Engineering Department undertakes the specification and design of multi-faceted, technically complex HV projects (up to 500 kV) to be installed by the Operations Department.

Role Overview

Under the leadership of the Group Head of Planning, you will responsible for managing a team and implementing all project planning procedures, ensuring compliance with the business management system. To establish and maintain positive and effective relationships with customers, senior management, partners and bid / operations teams. Within this division, you will essentially lead and support the planning and project controls strategy, and implement and manage the control of the planning process to ensure that contract solutions can be delivered to meet the project requirements and are in line with cost parameters.

Role Responsibilities

• Create relevant plans for all projects, taking into account design, construction, commissioning and closeout elements
• Develop and maintain the accuracy of each plan through a collaborative approach to ensure collective ownership and buy in from all relevant stakeholders and suppliers
• Facilitate the coming together of different elements of the plan sourced by relevant suppliers and stakeholders, continually monitoring performance and managing the interfaces between each
• Work closely with the operations teams to accurately influence and predict project performance
• Drive the early warning process by proactively identifying potential delivery risks before they occur and develop mitigation plans
• Drive the change process to ensure approved changes are reflected in the plan
• Ensure alignment between expenditure forecasts and delivery plan
• Analyse and manipulate the plans to utilise synergies across the programme of work that generate efficiencies
• Balance workload and place of work to best support office and site based delivery teams
• Improve delivery performance through regular site attendance
• Facilitate the early visibility of subcontractor and procurement demand
• Be responsible for escalating key milestones at risk to avoid delivery and expenditure delays
• Be fully aware of CDI measure and be a key player in managing outputs reporting
• Using a collaborative approach, create and maintain robust resource and cost loaded plans for all projects
• Pro-actively produce "what if" scenarios to identify delivery improvement opportunities or the development of mitigation plans
• Ensure the importance of the critical path activities and the sensitivity of other activities are communicated to the relevant stakeholders, and these are being acted on by the delivery teams
• Understand the sub-contractor scope and plan to ensure the required performance is delivered and any under performance is highlighted in advance
• Facilitate the delivery team to rehearse the delivery plan in advance of key activities to ensure optimal sequence and highlight any constraints or areas of conflict
• Responsible for all aspects of project programmes
• Represent project controls and lead client progress meetings when necessary
• Responsible for the completion of projects on schedule and budget
• Provision of project performance data, project schedules and reports in a concise and timely manner as required by the project teams
• Successful in identifying any project deviations and slippages, reports and communicates issues to senior members of the Project controls team
• You will deliver the period programme update and information regarding changes and delays that have impacted the programme on a period by period basis
• Deliver the necessary reports to allow senior managers to direct the project accordingly
• Ensuring that that all issues within the programme are highlighted and understood by Senior Management and giving appropriate planning advice
• Build rapport with limited set of common clients and maintaining regular communication, whilst always sharing best practice and innovation
• Assist with the development of all planning team staff to reach their full potential

The Person

• Considerable, in-depth experience of taking the planning lead for large complex projects / environments within the utilities, infrastructure, rail, civil engineering or construction sectors
• Extensive experience in coaching, mentoring and developing others and of self- development
• Be advanced in the use of planning techniques and the required planning toolsets (P6)
• Advanced understanding of various forms of tender documents, contract documents and specifications
• Advanced understanding of various methods of planning, programming and progress monitoring
• Advanced understanding of risk and opportunity management with particular reference to planning / programming
• Advanced understanding of the events that initiate, and of the methods used to demonstrate, delay or change entitlement
• Advanced understanding of the aforementioned markets, including methods of construction, plant, equipment and labour requirements
