Responsibilities for this Position:

The Structural Power Engineer is considered a highly valued position within the Electrical Engineering Center of Excellence. We are looking for highly self-motivated candidates that perform without appreciable direction. The ideal candidate must demonstrate a strong technical background with proven experience in high voltage structural power technologies and design, plus have excellent task management and organizational skills. The candidate must have strong oral and written communication skills, exhibit the ability to work and excel in a team environment and possess strong people skills with potential for future leadership positions.

This opportunity is a partial time position requiring work time flexibility due to utilizing the employee on an "as needed" or "on call" basis. Work time and hours will vary day to day and week to week. The Structural Power Engineer must be capable of executing assigned projects within program schedule and cost targets.

Primary Responsibilities:

Design and development of high power structural electrical systems that includes, but is not limited to:
  • Designing and developing AC and DC power flow and connections from AC/DC Sources, thru Power Distribution Panels, thru interconnecting cables to AC and DC power consuming loads within the system.
  • Understanding National Electric Code and other Standards documents to size and de-rate electrical components, wires, cables, circuit breakers, switch, connectors, etc used in the electrical hardware system.
  • Analyzing AC power loads and flows into Real Power (Watts), Volt-Ampere, and Reactive Power elements. Understand AC Power Factor.
  • Analyzing and maintaining data for AC and DC load power consumption ( nominal steady state, worst case steady state and in-rush/peak demand) in order to size the power handling requirements of wires, cables, circuit breakers and connectors.
  • Creating Wire Run Lists and Parts Lists documents, used by production personnel, to wire power assemblies and panels working from the Power Schematic details.

Additional qualifications:
  • Contribute to power related electrical requirements analysis, requirements definition, requirements management, requirements allocation, functional analysis, performance analysis, trade studies and definition for the design and verification of the power systems for major programs and projects containing substantial, complex electrical content
  • Contribute to the generation and maintenance of electrical work products (i.e. plans, specifications, design documentation, etc) used for internal consumption and/or deliverable to external customers
  • Develop and present electrical power requirements, concepts, designs, decisions and results to internal management, other organizations, team mates and customers
  • Apply a strong understanding of the organizationally defined electrical processes throughout the life-cycle of the program or project
  • Support the generation of technical engineering products by using the appropriate standards, processes, procedures, and tools throughout the electrical development life cycle
  • Lead the research and analysis of power data, such as customer design proposal, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application
  • Select power components and equipment based on analysis of specifications and reliability
  • Full use and understanding of electrical engineering concepts, principles, and theories
  • Strong understanding of electrical engineering processes
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to think creatively and multi-task
  • Skilled in communicating issues, impacts, and corrective actions
  • Ability to recognize and clearly report information relevant to sound electrical engineering power design

Basic Qualifications:

Candidates must demonstrate a passion for innovation, a sophisticated understanding of electronic equipment and systems, and the ability to further advance GDMS technology.

The Structural Power Engineer position requires a Bachelor's Degree in a Electrical Engineering or a similar specialized, area, field or the equivalent and at least eight years of related work experience. Applicants with a masters degree and a minimum of six years of related experience are also eligible. Travel may be required.

Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.
