The Program
Here is your opportunity to work on the first ever high-speed rail program in the U.S. while growing your career on a groundbreaking project. The California High-Speed Rail program will connect the mega-regions of the state, contribute to economic development and a cleaner environment, create jobs and preserve agricultural and protected lands. By 2029, the system will run from San Francisco to the Los Angeles basin in under three hours at speeds of more than 200 miles per hour. The system will also extend to Sacramento and San Diego, totaling 800 miles with up to 24 stations.

The Role
The California High Speed Rail Authority has awarded WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff the Program Management role within the Rail Delivery Partners (RDP) program delivery team. As a result we have an immediate opportunity for a highly motivated Amazon Web Services (AWS) Solutions Architect. The role will be a key contributor and lead in the vision, design, and implementation of a hybrid cloud virtual data center utilizing AWS to provide servers, storage, networks, high-availability, backup and disaster recovery, demand forecast, capacity planning, and performance management. The ideal candidate will collaborate with Authority and RDP staff, including subcontractors to define and implement infrastructure journey maps, technology adoption plans, and long term strategy. This position will play a critical role in driving innovation, change, and adoption of the AWS platform (e.g., AWS EC2, AWS S3, AWS RDS, AWS CloudFront, VPC, RedShift, QuickSight, Auto Scaling, Elastic Load Balancing, Route 53, Storage Gateway, etc.) The AWS Solutions Architect will own the technical engagement and success around specific implementation projects, and demonstrate a broad know-how around how applications, services, servers, and networking are constructed using the AWS platform, and provide subject matter expertise on security as it relates to Authority and RDP applications and services. The Solutions Architect will provide technical design and thought leadership. Responsibilities will include:
      • Design, deploy, manage and operate scalable, highly available, and fault tolerant systems on AWS
      • Implement and control the follow of data to and from AWS
      • Appropriate use of AWS operational best practices
      • Estimate AWS usage costs and identify operational cost control mechanisms
      • Research new technology advancements and conduct evaluations focused on optimizing and improving infrastructure configuration, performance, capacity, availability, and operational reliability
      • Defines strategy for and maintains technology standards
      • Works closely with other individuals and groups in the execution of technology proof of concepts, deployment, and adoption
      • Understand project challenges and requirements in order to influence future infrastructure requirements and enhances to address program needs
      • Partner with other technology partners to design, communicate, and implement strategies, technology roadmaps, standards, processes, services, infrastructure, and application solutions
      • Implement and delivers AWS infrastructure projects into operational delivery
      • Verify security, audit, and compliance requirements are met
      • Stay abreast of new and emerging AWS technology and processes, evolve and apply to continuously improve IT services for Authority and RDP
      • Make technical recommendations and influence business decisions
      • Identify and gather requirements to define a solution to be built and operated on AWS

Job Requirements
The Requirements
The position requires considerable decision-making capability, as well as an ability to research, evaluate and act on a wide variety of technical situations. Applicants must have demonstrated experience as a lead or having acted in a decision making role. The principal requirements include:
  • Experience provisioning, operating, and maintaining systems running on AWS
  • Thorough understanding of infrastructure (firewalls, load balancers, storage, monitoring, security etc) and have experience with orchestration to develop a cloud solution
  • At least ten years enterprise IT application experience that includes at least five years of hands-on software development, DevOps engineering, systems administration, or systems architecture
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent
  • Hands on experience with AWS and a strong understanding of AWS capabilities and limitations
  • Prior experience in a technical consulting role in a private, state, or local implementation project
  • Understanding of infrastructure and security requirements, such as HIPAA, CJIS, etc.
  • Demonstrated experiencing leading or developing high quality, enterprise scale software products using a structure system development life cycle
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills and team player characteristics
  • Experience with mixed project office environments.
  • Technical presentation experience - white board, small and large group presentations
  • Technical - Web services development/deployment experience, cloud computing
  • Operational - Web site/services operations, management, and security
  • Work with a diverse workgroup and in a collaborative environment
  • Highly motivated, enthusiastic to work in an integrated team office with multiple clients.
  • Must be able to handle multiple tasks, work under pressure, and work well with people.
  • Candidates must be able to work in the US immediately, local candidates preferred
