S1B Propulsion Plant Arrangements, Structures and Shielding (480)- The S1B Propulsion Plant Arrangements, Structures and Shielding Project is lead engineering organization (Design Yard) for arrangements, structures and shielding for the OHIO Replacement Program propulsion plant, including responsibility for non-propulsion plant structures in propulsion plant spaces. Radiation shielding engineers also provide consulting services and support to new construction activities at EB (Groton and Quonset Point facilities), Newport News Shipbuilding (Huntington Ingalls Industries), and for Commissioned Submarines, Moored Training ships, NR-1 Deep Submersible Research Submarine and their designated support facilities. Using a design build approach and working in a team environment, engineers develop innovative solutions to solve problems. Engineers interface with designers, shipyard personnel and our Navy customer. Opportunities exist for engineers with a BS or MS in civil, mechanical or nuclear engineering. Above average written and verbal communication skills are required. Some structural analysis work is required. An experienced mentor will be assigned to each engineer, and on the job training will be provided. Course work in fundamental courses (statics, dynamics) and in steel design should be strong. A strong interest in structures is preferred, as demonstrated by electives in structures and finite elements.
