The Virginia Class Ship Control System is a major technological improvement over the ship control systems of previous submarine classes. A fly-by-wire system controls the previous hydraulic mechanical-based system which controls the ship's steering and diving performance. It provides significantly increased capabilities, exceptional reliability via software fault tolerance, and reduced manning via automation. Motion Based Simulators and Trainers are also developed to support the operational and maintenance training of Navy crews. Systems also are developed to monitor critical platform systems and components to identify potential problems. |
For new construction and delivered submarines engineering opportunities exist to provide fleet support to address new capabilities, resolve problems, address electronic obsolescence, and to modernize legacy systems.
Engineers are responsible for the quality assurance engineering for the Fly-By-Wire certification of
• initial concept design through system development
• hardware/software components
• system acceptance and component testing
• system for unrestricted use for unrestricted operations
