The Electric Boat Naval Architecture Department (D496) is responsible for determining the hydrostatic and hydrodynamic characteristics of submarines and providing waterfront engineering support.|
Naval Architects are responsible for concept design development, detailed hydrostatic calculations supporting new designs, and new construction and lifecycle maintenance waterfront support activities. Concept design activities include design requirement trade-off assessments, early design optimization, team leadership and development of initial hydrostatic estimates. Detailed hydrostatic calculations include determination of tank volumes, ship displacement, trim, draft, surfaced and submerged ship stability, and evaluation of damage conditions. Waterfront activities include support of blocking, docking, submarine launching, and barge transportation of major hull sections.
