The successful candidate will be an entry level engineer responsible for supporting the D481 Waterfront Engineering - Ship Systems Department.

The engineer will work in a fluid systems engineering group (e.g. seawater & compressed gases, freshwater & ventilation, hydraulics or diesel & auxiliary) for VIRGINIA Class submarines under new construction. This work includes deck-plate support of trades, troubleshooting, supporting emergent shipyard issues, engineering resolution of engineering reports (ERs), test inspection reports (TIRs), comprehensive problem reports (CPRs), and vendor information requests (VIRs) for the lead design yard. The engineer is responsible for the technical content and quality of all work performed, maintaining training requirements, and supporting the shipyard in achieving scheduled major milestones. This organization interfaces with and provides direct support to the trades during ship construction and testing in Groton, Quonset Point, and Newport News by addressing and clearing liabilities impacting achievement of major milestones. The job requires preparation of technical submittals to NAVSEA. It also requires significant interface with various disciplines within and outside of Electric Boat, including equipment vendors, ships management program office, test organizations, SUPSHIP and others.

As an engineer, he/she will have several responsibilities within this department, which are:
• Writing technical dispositions to resolve emergent shipyard issues
• Troubleshooting and making design modifications to minimize the impacts to ships schedule while maintaining technical quality
• Interfacing with the trades and the ships test organizations to facilitate completion of test forms
• Working with other engineering groups to coordinate a technically complete response to shipyard issues
• Performing calculations to verify the technical quality of design modifications (pipe sizing and thickness, fluid system flow balancing, thermal analysis, etc.)
• Deck-plate support of all system testing
