Role Summary Were a 30 people strong and well respected and high growth technology company, based in Oval, London. We design, produce and supply miniature DC motors, gear motors, vibration motors and mechanisms based around these parts. Weve been going for 12 years, and have become the market leader in our sector; our company is growing fast, and so has the complexity of the product solutions that our customers want. With the increasing number of customisation requests and their increasing complexity, we need management help. Specifically we want to hire a competent product development manager to oversee and project manage the moving parts of taking a technically qualified customer requirement all the way through to product specification for mass production. Role Details In this Product Development Manager role, you will co-ordinate between our sales engineering team in London (customer facing), and our design-for-manufacture and production team in Hong Kong (production facing). This role is at the very heart of the value that we add to our customers. Generally, it works like this: The marketing and business development work generates the 'leads, which then feed into the sales engineering team. The sales engineering team then qualify the customers based on a commercial and technical capability fit. Obviously, part of the qualification process requires us to study and understand the customers needs, and this is where your involvement would start. The product (customer solution) development process then begins and involves input from the sales engineers, sales manager in London and our technical, quality and production leads in Hong Kong. Each product development project is tracked within an 'opportunity object in our in-house written CRM / ERP system. Commercial and technical impediments are identified and resolved, and the sale moves forwards. Of course, as the product development project progresses from a loosely defined customer requirement into a production-ready part number and specification, lots of things tend to change, curve-balls sent and fresh impediments come out of the woodwork. Customers demands change, specific factory capabilities change and a successful production sale is set-up when we can align both sides. Once the customer signs off on a spec that we can efficiently produce, we can celebrate as we now have another customer in serial production. Serial high volume production for customised mechanisms to a consistent quality standard, is the core value of our business. When things get to production stage, theyre then managed by the production team, and you (hopefully) get a warm fuzzy feeling from having achieved a reduction in entropy that our customers (many blue-chip multinationals) werent able to achieve themselves. The system is efficient and works well. However, I (the sales director) am trying to cover this process and can no longer handle the workload of this co-ordination / management with my other duties. You will be working closely with me to begin with, but ideally I want to move back to business development / marketing by 2016 and focus again on developing our brand and getting more leads into the company. If it wasnt obvious above, you will need to make a daily call to our office in Hong Kong. They are GMT +8 hrs and go home between 6-7pm. Therefore you will have to get into a routine of making an agenda before you go home the day before (that is, tagging various opportunities with a label to indicate they are to be discussed), and then have a quick scan in the morning for any updates / developments that happened during their day, before you speak. This process + call will often take around 90 minutes or so, which means youll need to be in the office, 8 - 8:30am in the winter, and 9 - 9:30am in the summer (Hong Kong doesnt have daylight time savings). Requirements and Compensation Negotiable starting salary. Opportunity to help develop and manage a high growth business. You must be able to speak and write English to a native standard. You must have a degree or equivalent qualification in engineering (preferably electronic or mechanical engineering). You must have experience in engineering project management / industrial product development or equivalent. Ideally you will have some production (management) experience as well. You must have the necessary visas / work permits to take on a full-time permanent role in the UK. You must be able to get into work in time to prepare and make a call, with our Hong Kong office before they go home. Please see below for some further information about working with us... Working for Precision Microdrives (aka PMD)... Oval is the nearest tube (3 minutes to our office) and Vauxhall is about 15 minutes walk away. Waterloo, Victoria and London Bridge are all easily commutable. Were just off the A3 if you cycle, and there is some limited free parking nearby if you drive and youre early enough. We operate Flexi-time based on an 9 hour day with an hour for lunch. So thats 8~10 am till 5~7pm. What we do... Our main source of income is designing and manufacturing miniature motors and mechanisms. These motors are used in cars, robots, mobile phones, medical products and so on. We sell parts to 3M, Motorola, Intel, Foxconn to name but a few. This niche is growing, and our sales along with it at around 40~50% year on year. We want to hear from you... If you think this is for you, please pen an email to managementjobs at precisionmicrodrives dot com, and tell us about yourself. Were a little old fashioned so we like to receive covering letters and its always nice to know that you have read this advert rather than just 'ticked and clicked :) Speak soon, Team PMD.
